Mercedes driver George Russell explained that his frustration with teammate Lewis Hamilton was a 'hot-headed' moment during the Spanish GP qualifying session last Saturday. The young British driver could not control his anger towards the seven-time world champion and blamed the latter for ruining his preparation lap before his first timed lap in Q3.
Russell was angered and asked his race engineer Marcus Dudley on the team radio,
"What the fu** is Lewis doing?"
Dudley replied that they will speak about the incident after the session.
Speaking to the media after qualifying, George Russell explained the whole sequence and claimed that Lewis Hamilton was trying to get a tow from Esteban Ocon to gain a couple of tenths on his first Q3 lap. He said (via Crash.net):
“Lewis was quite a long way ahead of me but we both had our eyes on the same driver for the slipstream for opening the lap. So I was focusing on my mirrors not to impede Ocon, and the next thing, I looked up, Lewis was right in front of me trying to take the tow from Ocon."
"At the moment when you’re trying to get everything you’re a bit hot headed, but nothing gained nothing lost,” he added.
George Russell reveals the inspiration behind his race start in Barcelona
George Russell cited Fernando Alonso's epic start during the 2011 Spanish GP as his inspiration behind an excellent start of his own that saw him take the race lead from P4 and pass both Lando Norris and Max Verstappen into Turn 1 in Barcelona this year.
As per Motorsport.com, the Mercedes driver said about the start:
"I was dreaming about it last night and what my plan of attack was going to be. When I was racing karts I always remembered watching Fernando in 2011 starting from P4 and getting into the lead. I knew it was possible."
The 26-year-old further mentioned that he had practiced the maneuver on his way to the grid, adding:
"I did four laps to the grid and practiced braking as late as possible on every single lap, so I knew where the limit was. I knew how strong the wind was and I knew what was possible with the car, so it was a calculated risk. It was satisfying to pull off."
However, the euphoria of his start did not last long as he was overtaken by Max Verstappen on Lap 3 and failed to finish on the podium as he lost out on P3 to Lewis Hamilton, whose strategy proved faster for him in the race.
George Russell solidified his P7 in the Drivers' Championship and moved to within six points of Oscar Piastri in P6, having added 12 points to his tally. His total is now 81 points after ten races and two Sprints.
