Fernando Alonso won the hearts of many in the 2023 F1 Miami GP. He stood on the podium once again after finishing third in the race. More importantly, he complimented his teammate, Lance Stroll, for overtaking an Alpine in turn one.
This was shocking for all the spectators and even F1 pundits and commentators, as they had never seen an F1 driver compliment their teammate for an overtake while they were driving as well. It was even more surprising since Alonso was nowhere near Stroll to see the move live happening before his eyes.
Since the Miami circuit had several massive TV screens on some corners, the 41-year-old veteran was able to see the stroll's move right before turning for the corner. Right after seeing the move, Fernando Alonso came on the team radio and complimented Lance Stroll for it. He also learned that the move was for the 13th position.
This blew people's minds, as hundreds of fans flocked to Twitter and reacted to it. Some were simply amazed to see Fernando Alonso's skill in looking at a TV screen, observing the overtake, all while driving an F1 car, braking perfectly, and taking the corner. while others humorously discussed that the Spaniard has adopted Lace Stroll by coming into Aston Martin.
"Magic Alonso getting paid to slack off at work"
"F1 suddenly starts to appreciate how big of a driver is Alonso, and realised how lucky they are (and WE all are) to have him in a car. Thanks"
Prior to the Miami GP, Fernando Alonso shocked the F1 universe in the Azerbaijan GP as well. During the race in Baku, the Spaniard came on the radio and suggested Lance Stroll use the same brake balance as he was using. He told his race engineers to pass on the setup to Stroll's side of the garage so that he could use the same setup in his car. This shows how willingly Alonso wants to help Stroll.
Fernando Alonso feels overtaking is too easy for Red Bull drivers
Fernando Alonso spoke about how easy it was for the reigning world champion Max Verstappen to overtake cars with DRS. It is no secret that the RB19 is by far the fastest car on the grid at the moment. Hence, the Spaniard voices his concern about how easy it is for Red Bull to dominate. Speaking to Sky Sports, Alonso said:
“At the moment, it is hard to keep them behind. And I was hoping that he had like a DRS train of cars in front of him but he was just making moves, one after the other and the guys in front, they were not in the DRS either. So it was a little bit too easy for him. Hopefully, next time we try between all of us to make things more difficult.”
Aston Martin is currently the second-fastest team on the grid, but they are still miles behind Red Bull. The Miami GP was the best race of the green British team since they were only 15 seconds behind the reigning world champions, which was closer compared to other races at the start of the season.
