Red Bull's Helmut Marko looked back at the time when Juan Pablo Montoya drove for his Formula 3000 team, noting that the seven-time race winner was not very disciplined.

The Colombian had a lot of hype around him, even in junior categories. Montoya would even go on to win the F3000 championship, the equivalent of the Formula 2 series currently.

Juan Pablo Montoya had a decently successful stint in F1, winning multiple races with Williams and McLaren. He even fought for the title in 2003, falling short as Michael Schumacher took over later in the year.

Juan Pablo Montoya's F1 career would end after a two-year stint (2005-06) with McLaren, where his relationship with Ron Dennis (the team boss) went sour. Now, Juan Pablo's son Sebastian Montoya races in F3 and is a part of Red Bull's driver academy.

In an interview with GrandPrix247, Red Bull chief Helmut Marko reminisced about his experience of working with Juan Pablo Montoya and reflected on how even though the Colombian was extremely talented, he wasn't disciplined and was very lazy:

“Juan Pablo, he came here to Graz. The first thing he asked me was which of the four McDonald’s in Graz was the best. So his food was unhealthy. He was a lazy b*st*rd. Yeah. But he was unbelievably fast. But he made so many stupid mistakes."

He added:

“We were leading the first race in England, and he crashed. Similar to his son (Seb), but the son is crashing not in the front. He is crashing more in the top-ten. So we had a hard time with Juan Pablo. For quite a lot of times, we didn’t even talk to each other."

Red Bull chief enjoys a great relationship with Juan Pablo Montoya now

The Red Bull chief said that he's now 'good friends' with Juan Pablo Montoya. The Austrian, though, added that Juan Pablo wasted his talent in F1, as he could have been a world champion, just like his former teammate Kimi Raikkonen.

Marko also reckons Juan Pablo's son Sebastian doesn't have the kind of raw pace his father did as he said:

“Now we are good friends. And yeah, he wasted his talent he could have been multiple F1 World Champion. His son Seb, unfortunately, doesn’t have this ultimate speed like Juan Pablo, but he compensates nearly every race.”

Juan Pablo's son is a part of the Red Bull junior academy. The young Sebastian is racing in F3 but has not had the best of starts to the season.
