After the disappointment in Hungary, Max Verstappen is looking for some relief at the Belgium Grand Prix weekend. The Dutchman shared a light moment with his teammate Sergio Perez ahead of the Free Practice (FP1) session at Spa.
Despite dominating at the start of the season, Verstappen and Red Bull Racing are facing tough competition from McLaren F1, Scuderia Ferrari, and Mercedes-AMG. While the Dutchman is leading the driver's standings, the reigning world champion is likely feeling frustrated at losing to rivals in recent GPs.
This was apparent at the Hungarian GP, where Verstappen was voicing his disappointment with the RB20 and team strategy throughout the weekend. Further adding to his woes was the late-race clash with his old rival Lewis Hamilton, which saw the triple-world champion ending the race in fifth place.
Now, ahead of the race at the iconic Spa circuit, Verstappen spent some light moments with Perez during the fun-filled 'Guess the Driver' segment for fans.
"He likes to show himself on Instagram a lot," Verstappen said before laughing heartily (0:10 onwards).
Their hilarious interaction was shared by a Verstappen fan page on X (formerly Twitter):
Max: "He's very handsome, very popular with the ladies, they almost jump on top of him every time he walks into the paddock, he's very fast (..) He speaks Spanish, but is not from Spain" Checo: "That's me!? 😃"
Verstappen was also able to dominate the field by setting the fastest time in the FP1 session, ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Williams F1's Alex Albon. This was likely due to the introduction of a new Power Unit as well as some changes to RB20's aero components.
"Act like a world champion" - Lewis Hamilton's response to Max Verstappen's antics during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend
The 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix was a weekend to forget for Max Verstappen. The Dutchman was seen explicitly criticizing his RB20 race car as well as strategy calls from the team throughout the weekend.
The drama continued after the race, with Verstappen asking his critics to back off in a not-so-subtle way during the post-race media interaction. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was asked about his opinion on Verstappen's behavior.
“You have to be a team leader, a team member. Maybe not such a team leader but just always remember you’re a team-mate with lots of people and you have to act like a World Champion,” Hamilton replied (via Planet F1).
Verstappen's Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Perez is reportedly under pressure from the management. This is likely due to his poor performance since the massive crash at Monaco. Rumors of Perez being replaced either by Daniel Ricciardo or Liam Lawson are on the rise as well.
