F1 pundit Ted Kravitz claimed that Red Bull Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey is preparing himself to join a rival team for the 2025 season. Ahead of the Miami GP this year, it was announced that the iconic designer would be leaving the Austrian team after 19 years, and he stopped his F1 duties immediately to focus on the RB17 hypercar project.
Although there have been several teams in contention to get Newey's signature for the upcoming season, the 65-year-old had revealed that he would be taking time off to decide about his future.
In his Ted's Notebook segment for Sky Sports, Kravitz spoke about Newey's presence in the Red Bull garage despite not being involved in the development of the RB20. He said (via Crash.net):
“I’ve got to tell you about Adrian Newey, who amazingly is still coming to races, is amazingly still going around the Red Bull garage, looking at the car that he’s not in charge of anymore with his notebook and making notes about the Red Bull to take to wherever he’s going."
Kravitz further spoke about Adrian Newey 'sketching designs' for the other cars on the grid which confirmed that he won't be leaving the sport permanently anytime soon, adding:
"He’s on the grid sketching designs of what everybody else [is doing] and all the upgrades that every other team is bringing and thinking about, I’m going to take these.
"So clearly, whoever said that they think Adrian Newey is going to retire, err wrong. And he’s obviously going somewhere else because why would you be coming here and making notes about other people’s cars?” he added.
Adrian Newey provides a deadline for his decision on his future
Adrian Newey stated that he wasn't sure about what comes next in his future and which F1 team he would join in the 2024 season.
Speaking with Sky Sports, the 65-year-old aerodynamicist said (via F1.com):
“I don’t know. At the moment, I’m just kind of still working on the RB17, our track car, and then just taking some time off."
When asked further if he would be making his final decision by winter times, Newey replied:
“Yeah, that’s certainly the target. By then I’ll need to have made my mind up.” he added.
The reports of him joining Ferrari have lost a little bit of steam in the last month with Aston Martin reportedly entering the fray. It was rumored that he even visited the new factory of the Silverstone-based team discreetly.
Although Newey had spoken about his 'regret' of never joining the Italian team previously, his old friend Jeremy Clarkson revealed that he was house hunting in the Oxfordshire area and not in Maranello, ahead of the British GP.
