Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko claimed that he was not happy with the Visa Cash App RB driver Liam Lawson's driving against Sergio Perez at the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix. The Kiwi driver once again displayed his feisty driving style in the main race, while he battled with the midfield cars along with Oscar Piastri and Sergio Perez, who were making their way from the back rows of the grid.
Starting from P12, Lawson moved up a place after his teammate Yuki Tsunoda crashed out on Turn 1 and found himself on the fringes of the points for most of the early part of the race.
However, Liam Lawson got a bit too feisty in his battle against Sergio Perez, which resulted in a damaged sidepod and floor for the home hero. Speaking about the incident to ESPN Mexico, the Red Bull advisor mentioned that the 21-year-old shouldn't have fought this hard, saying:
"We are brother teams and Lawson should not drive as hard as he did. He reacted too strongly."
The Austrian further commented on the heated battle, via GP Blog:
"Yes, he had a coming together with Lawson which damaged his car. So for the whole Red Bull teams, it was not a very good weekend. Checo was also very upset with Lawson. So I think we have to sit down and discuss it here. "
"But we know Lawson is a very tough racer. He's very difficult to overtake. But it shouldn't be within, not teammates, but with sister teams. There should be more respect," he added.
Liam Lawson gives his take on his incident with Sergio Perez
VCARB F1 driver Liam Lawson stated that he was "apologetic" for his behavior during the Mexican Grand Prix after he showed the middle finger to Sergio Perez during their battle.
As per The Race, the Kiwi said of the incident:
“He drove me off the track and then he didn't give me space into Turn 5. So it's just unfortunate. I didn't have anywhere to go. It's one of those in-the-moment things. He spent half the lap blocking me, trying to ruin my race. I was upset."
“It's not an excuse, I shouldn't have done it and I apologize for that. It's not in my character and not something that should be done.”
Liam Lawson had another altercation in the race as he damaged his front wing after his collision with Franco Colapinto in the latter stages of the race. He eventually finished in P16, a place ahead of Sergio Perez.
The Kiwi previously had a heated exchange with Fernando Alonso during the US Grand Prix last weekend after the two-time world champion was critical of the former's moves during their battle in the Sprint race.
