Lando Norris recalled his hair-raising moment while leading the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix where he almost hit the wall after locking up his tires. He reported damage on the front wing but the team revealed that it was not serious.
The McLaren driver won his third F1 race as he converted his pole position to victory in Singapore. He led the Grand Prix after an excellent start over his championship rival Max Verstappen and kept increasing the gap. While his race went seemingly perfectly, there was a close moment when he locked his tire up, and almost ended up hitting the wall. At this point, he had a 26-second lead over Verstappen, just enough for a free pit stop.
Reviewing the moment in the cool-down room, Lando Norris shared a laugh with Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen.
"I actually sh*t myself"
In the end, Lando Norris managed to pull a 20.9-second gap over Max Verstappen to grab the victory in Singapore. This has gotten him close to the lead of the World Championship. Currently, there is a 52-point gap between the two drivers. McLaren, meanwhile, has now opened up a 41-point lead over Red Bull in the constructors' championship standings.
Lando Norris reflects on Singapore Grand Prix win with McLaren
McLaren has emerged as the surprise favorite to win the F1 drivers' and constructors' championship this season. Lando Norris managed to win his first F1 race and is now an active contender for the title. Current leader Max Verstappen has not won a Grand Prix since Spain, which has given McLaren the chance to get ahead of Red Bull in the constructors' standings.
After the Singapore GP, Norris described his car as "mega." He said:
"It was an amazing race," he said. "A few too many close calls - I had a couple of little moments in the middle - but it was well controlled, I think, otherwise. The car was mega. I could push, we were flying the whole race, and at the end could just chill. So it was a nice race, still tough, I'm a bit out of breath, but a fun one."
To win the drivers' championship, Norris will need to stay at or near the top in the remaining six races. Although Max Verstappen has struggled in recent races, he remains in top five contention in most of the races.
