McLaren driver Lando Norris has blamed himself for missing out on his maiden British GP win on Sunday, as he finished P3 behind Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. The 24-year-old was leading most of the race at Silverstone but made a strategic error in the final phase of the race.
Norris came out on softer tires, just like Hamilton, while trying to protect his race lead from the seven-time world champion. However, he was unable to do so and even lost the P2 slot to a charging Verstappen in the final laps.
In his post-race interview with F1TV, Lando Norris mentioned that he 'hated' the fact that he didn't make some right decisions on the track and missing out on another race win. He said:
"I blame myself today for not making some of the right decisions but I hate it. I hate ending up in this position and ever having excuses for not doing a good enough job but I’m still happy. I’m still going to enjoy it."
However, he promised to make a strong comeback in next year's edition of the race.
“I think we still did so many things right, so many positives. But especially here at Silverstone, the one place I would love for everything to go perfectly. It didn’t today, but I’m going to come back stronger next year and try again,” he added.
Lando Norris praises Lewis Hamilton for British GP win
Lando Norris was magnanimous in his praise of Lewis Hamilton as the latter secured his ninth win at the British GP on Sunday.
Here's what he told the media:
"First of all, congrats to Lewis. That crucial decision in the end he just did a better job. Hats off to him and Mercedes so they deserve it."
While analyzing his own race, the McLaren driver pointed out that the team was making a few too many mistakes.
"It was tough. It was enjoyable, it was fun battling these guys. These tricky conditions are always on a knife edge and you're risking a lot. So many things good, but a few too many letdowns today and as a team, I don't think we quite did the job we should have done, or good enough. But still lovely to be on the podium here at Silverstone," he stated.
Lando Norris has now slipped further away from Max Verstappen in his bid to challenge the Red Bull driver in the driver's championship and is behind by 84 points.
