Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton claimed that he had a plan for the remaining years of his career but would "love a proper break." The seven-time world champion would join the Ferrari F1 team in a change of scenery from Brackley-Maranello after spending 12 years with the German team.
The 39-year-old is the second oldest driver on the current grid, behind Fernando Alonso, and has been racing at the pinnacle of motorsport since 2007. He has only missed one race in his 17-year-long career in the 2020 season due to contracting COVID-19.
Speaking with Esquire, Lewis Hamilton mentioned that he does consider how much longer he wants to continue in the sport as he would want some time away from the track as well. He said:
"I definitely do. There are days I’m like, shoot, I don’t know how much longer I can go. There are days I’m like, shoot, I’d love a break, a proper break because you don’t get a real big break in the season like other sports. You don’t finish until mid to late December, and then you’re back into training already in January, and that’s two times a day you’re training."
"There are another couple of hours of therapy that you’re doing during that time as well. So you’re not really getting a huge amount of downtime. And in February, you’re flat-out running until December," he added.
Lewis Hamilton explains his approach to racing younger drivers
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton stated that he has always been 'naturally competitive' and always thinks about winning despite racing against younger drivers.
As quoted by the aforementioned source, the 105-time race winner said:
"I’m super competitive naturally. I don’t care who it is. I just want to win. When I won the other day, I didn’t think anything about anybody else. I just thought about my team. I thought about the people that were with me. People that have sacrificed their time away from their families."
"People who were giving that extra bit of time in their day when they could have left early to go home and see the kids, and they’ve given that extra time to build these parts that got us that result," he added.
Lewis Hamilton is the only driver in the 2024 season to win multiple races, apart from Max Verstappen as he claimed this accomplishment by winning the British GP and at Spa-Francorchamps ahead of the summer break.
In his final season with Mercedes, the British driver is currently P6 in the driver's championship with 150 points from 14 races and three Sprints thus far. After a slow start to the year, the seven-time world champion has been consistent since the Spanish GP after the team brought upgrades.
