F1 fans were left reeling after Red Bull driver Max Verstappen vented out his frustrations on his race engineer GP Lambiase during the FP3 session at the Hungarian GP. The three-time world champion was not fully comfortable with his upgraded RB20 as he could not extract the maximum out of the package at the Hungaroring ahead of the all-important qualifying session.
The Dutch driver informed Lambiase that he believed that the timings and the performance wouldn't improve in the rain. To help his change, the Anglo-Italian race engineer asked if his frustration was related to tire temperature and suggested that they could box if he did not want to drive on slicks in the damp conditions.
F1 fans took to social media to give their reactions to Verstappen's outburst on X, with one fan sympathizing with Lambiase's position and saying:
"I'm 100% sure that GP has a bottle of scotch in the pit wall, just to prepare for Max's outbursts."
"Lmfao he hit em with the “calm down”, said a fan.
Another fan claimed:
"Max and gp always bring the drama."
Another pointed out:
"I feel like sometimes gp doesn’t understand max is driving a racing car at peak adrenaline in very tricky conditions."
"I think GP knows now he's the main man here. He won't put up with that." mulled a fan.
Max Verstappen gives his take on RB20's lack of performance to McLaren
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen stated that the RB20 had been on the knife's edge for the last couple of races and the performance wasn't where he wanted it to be.
In his post-qualifying press conference, the 26-year-old said:
"It's been like that already for a while, so we are well aware of that. We are pushing as hard as we can, but clearly, at the moment, it's still not how we want it to be. We'll continue to do so. We'll try to find more performance, but I'm also well aware that that's not very easy to find suddenly throughout the season, with things already just planned, and just the way the car is".
Verstappen added:
"But we'll see. I mean, there are many races. There are a lot of things that can happen in qualifying with conditions and stuff like that. So we just need to stay focused and do the best we can every single time and optimize our performances".
Max Verstappen finished under a tenth behind the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the Hungarian GP qualifying session and would start the main race in P3. He would hope to get a start similar to his last three races where he made the corner ahead of Norris and fought for his third consecutive win at the Hungaroring.
