F1 fans were left in denial after Visa Cash App RB driver Daniel Ricciardo finished the 2024 Singapore GP in P18 on Sunday. It has been an emotional and difficult weekend for the Aussie as it is widely speculated that it might be the final race of his illustrious F1 career, with Liam Lawson taking over his seat from Austin.
The 35-year-old had a positive start to the weekend as he looked quick in the first two practice sessions but could not replicate that in qualifying and the race. However, he was arguably able to cap off his career with a Driver of the Day and a fastest lap, which in turn might help his former Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen in his quest to defend his title against Lando Norris.
The 26-year-old was appreciative of Riccardo's efforts as he denied Norris the first Grand Chelem of his career.
F1 fans took to social media to give their reactions to Max Verstappen thanking Daniel Ricciardo on X, with one fan refusing to believe that the Aussie might bid farewell to the sport after Singapore.
"I refuse to believe daniel's getting dropped mid season. I hope they at least give him a proper send off from the sport :(" they said.
"That was so cute," another fan remarked.
"Imagine if his final act in F1 is helping Max," commented a fan.
However, some fans did not agree with Red Bull's tactics.
"F***ed up they're using their second team in the title fight when no other team gets that benefit and if it IS Daniel's last race, it taints that for him," said a fan.
"Can't beat MCL on pure pace so they have to use their sister team to nick a point, lmao they've fallen so hard," claimed another.
Daniel Ricciardo analyzes his Singapore GP on Sunday
VCARB driver Daniel Ricciardo said it was a tough race for him as he was banking on a Safety Car to make some positions starting from P16 for the main race.
Speaking in his post-race interview, the Aussie said:
"After yesterday qualifying out of position we had to try something. We tried to wait for a safety car. It wasn't easy to overtake, I don't think there were many.
However, he joked that he was expecting a Christmas present from Max Verstappen, saying:
"The last few laps, I thought, I'd go for the fastest lap. Nothing is against Lando, but if Max wins by a point, I have earned myself a good Christmas present."
Daniel Ricciardo's contract with RB F1 team runs out at the end of the 2024 season, having joined the team in Hungary in 2023.
