There has been plenty of speculation surrounding Adrian Newey's next destination, and now a former McLaren colleague of Newey has suggested the highly decorated F1 designer will join one of the sport's most prestigious teams, Scuderia Ferrari.
Earlier this season, the legendary F1 designer announced his decision to part ways with Red Bull Racing in the first quarter of 2025, following a nearly two-decade stint with the team. Recent reports strongly link the 65-year-old Briton to joining Aston Martin, while he was earlier reported to join Ferrari.
Jo Ramirez, a team coordinator for McLaren between 1984 and 2001, believes his former colleague Newey will join Ferrari. Speaking to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Ramirez shared his opinion on the Red Bull Racing CTO's future destination. He said:
"I don't think he will retire. I see him at Ferrari, because any job you do successfully in F1 you have to do at Ferrari too. Ferrari is the biggest team in F1 and why not, if you have the opportunity... and it's not a question of money, because he already has a lot more money than he can spend in his life."
Ramirez added that while the logistics of working with the Maranello-based team might present a problem for Newey, remote work could be a possibility. Ramirez also said that Newey hadn't said anything about this subject to him:
"The difficulty could be if he has to go and live in Italy, because he is happy in Great Britain. But today the rules have changed, you can work remotely and two or three days a week he will have his private plane to take him there and back. He could do that. I haven't spoken to him about it, although I did meet him at the historic Monaco GP and we chatted, although he doesn't say anything about it."
Ramirez is confident that Newey will continue in F1 and acknowledged the speculation will continue to grow until any official announcement is made.
Eddie Jordan shares his thoughts on Adrian Newey's decision
Ex-F1 team owner and Adrian Newey's manager, Eddie Jordan, addressed the speculation surrounding Newey's future on his Formula for Success podcast. With co-host David Coulthard pressing him to drop hints about Newey's next move, Jordan refrained from doing so.
Jordan said the ultimate decision lies with the 65-year-old Newey, who has been designing race cars since graduating from University in the early 1980s. He said (via PlanetF1):
"Adrian is a super, super talented person, not many more intellectual brains anywhere in the world and certainly in Formula 1. The guy is iconic. And it’ll be his choice. He will decide, I presume, ‘Do I take some time out because I’ve been doing this every year since I was in university?’"
"But truthfully, I have no idea and I just want to wish him well. Because wherever he goes it would be a massive boost for that team. That’s one thing I will say," Jordan added.
Newey is reportedly to join Lawrence Stroll-backed Aston Martin, with reports also saying the decision can be expected to be announced in September.
