With one win and two podium finishes in the last four races, McLaren's Oscar Piastri has become one of the top contenders in the 2024 Formula 1 season. However, his mother has Nicole recalled a funny conversation with the young racer, showcasing his jovial nature.
Piastri began his racing career with karting events in his hometown of Melbourne. After gaining enough experience, the young Australian driver moved to Europe to compete in the lower Formula divisions. Winning the Formula Renault, F3, and, F2 championships in three back-to-back seasons saw Piastri move quickly to the Formula 1 grid, and he now drives for the iconic British team, McLaren.
In a dream start to his F1 career, Piastri grabbed two podium finishes for the Papaya outfit in his debut season (2023), and clinched his first victory at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. As of now, the 23-year-old racer is placed fourth in the drivers' championship standings, behind Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing), Lando Norris (McLaren), and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari).
Although Piastri is fierce on the racetrack, he has a funny bone off it, albeit a bit unusual (somewhat similar to Kimi Raikkonen). On a recent episode of The Red Flags Podcast, Nicole Piastri shared a light-hearted moment with her son from the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix weekend.
With Bahrain's Mumtalakat Holding Company taking full control of the McLaren Group this year, the British F1 team was hosted at the Royal Palace by the Crown Prince of Bahrain. During a Facetime call between the mother-son duo, Nicole questioned Oscar about his fancy accommodation.
"I'm a guest of the crown prince (royal palace). He owns the team," Piastri replied (0:17 onwards).
"Oh my God, get your head off the tapestry. Oscar, that would be worth like a squillion dollars," Nicole exclaimed on Piastri's response (0:22 onwards).
Here's a look at the video clip shared by a Formula 1 fan on X, captioned:
"Nicole Piastri: What hotel are you staying at? Oscar Piastri: I’m at the royal palace (Bahrain) Nicole: What? Oscar: I’m guest of the Crown Prince.. He owns the team NP: Get your head off the tapestry it’s probably worth a squillion dollars OP: I really don’t think so."
"Fame has not changed Oscar" - Oscar Piastri's mother
McLaren's Oscar Piastri, along with the rest of the team, spent the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend at the Royal Palace. However, despite his fame from F1, the young Australian driver remains grounded.
During her appearance on The Red Flags Podcast, his mother Nicole shared a light-hearted moment with Piastri. On a Facetime call, the 23-year-old racer revealed his fancy whereabouts to Nicole. He also proceeded to show the villa-like room he was offered by the Crown Prince for the weekend. However, during the call, Nicole noticed Piastri's clothes scattered all around the place.
"Oscar, pick up your pick up your clothes," Nicole exclaimed (44:19 onwards).
However, Oscar Piastri replied casually that no one was coming to his room. The reply caused his mother to give up.
"Fame has not changed Oscar," Nicole commented (44.47 onwards).
