F1 fans were left furious after McLaren driver Lando Norris was able to get a lap in the Q2 session, which eventually proved to be good enough for P1, while his championship rival Max Verstappen was caught out by the red flag. The British driver had a strong session in the rain at the iconic Interlagos track on Sunday morning as he was able to secure pole position for the main race.
Norris had a sketchy start to the qualifying session as he just about managed to get out of the Q1 session as he finished P15. But after his early wobble, the McLaren driver looked to be in control of the conditions and his car as he put in fast laps in continuous succession.
However, he got a bit lucky with the timing of the red flag brought on by Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll as he finished the lap which took him out of the danger zone in Q2 seconds before the session was stopped. But Red Bull driver Max Verstappen wasn't so lucky as he was unable to finish his lap before the session was stopped, finishing P12.
Following this, F1 fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their reactions to events in Q2, with one fan saying,
"Just hand Norris the championship and end the season. What a joke."
Another fan added,
"Delaying a red flag so that some cars have time to complete their laps isn't right!"
"This is so f**king unfair."
Here are some more fan reactions:
"Very interesting time to throw up that red flag," said a fan.
"Everything goes against RB and for McL. Just sad," said another.
"Absolute joke delay delay delay until the last possible second for Norris to get out the bottom then surprise surprise red flag is called," remarked another.
Lando Norris previews the main race at the Brazilian GP
McLaren driver Lando Norris said that he and the team would look to "prepare well" for the main race later on Sunday as he looks to win his first race in Brazil.
Following the end of qualifying in Interlagos, Norris said:
"Eyes forward. I've got some quick guys behind. George put in a nice lap and Yuki has been flying in the wet all day today. It's never easy in these conditions. What I would like to do is not always the easiest thing. We'll prepare well. I hope we can get a race in, that would be a good start. We'll see what we can do."
Lando Norris would hope to score as many points as possible to inflict maximum damage to Max Verstappen's championship lead in Brazil.
