McLaren driver Lando Norris claimed he was not complaining about his title rival Red Bull driver Max Verstappen at the end of the 2024 F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday. The British driver had a brilliant comeback race on Sunday as he made his way from P15 to finish P4 ahead of the Dutch driver.
The 24-year-old was efficient in the first half of the race as he managed to hold off the three-time world champion in old tires before passing on new mediums later in the race to finish ahead of him.
At the end of the race, Norris immediately took to his team radio to report Verstappen for overtaking under VSC conditions. In his post-race interview with F1TV, the McLaren driver clarified that he was not complaining but stating facts.
“I didn’t complain about anything, I just stated facts. I just had VSC on my dash with the yellow lights," Lando Norris said. "Obviously, there was a crash with paramedics on track which normally means no overtaking but he was overtaking. So I questioned it, I quizzed my team because I didn’t think you were allowed to overtake but maybe I’m wrong.”
Max Verstappen, on the other hand, was left "surprised" by the accusation and said:
“We crossed the line, the race is finished, and there are a lot of examples in the past, this year as well, when we have done exactly the same thing. So for me I’m a bit surprised.”
The Red Bull driver was subsequently cleared by the race stewards as they believed that the 26-year-old did not do anything wrong.
Lando Norris analyzes his P4 finish at the Azerbaijan GP
McLaren driver Lando Norris said it was a "great result" for the team to have both drivers in the Top 4 as his teammate Oscar Piastri took an amazing race win.
As per F1.com, the Brit said:
"A great result for the team, with a great race from both sides. First of all, congrats to Oscar for another win, he deserves it. I think I had a great race. I got the fastest lap and a good number of points from where we were so I’m very happy.
"We’re the team that gained the most points today, so I think we should be very satisfied with that. It’s the maximum we could have done today, and we’ve taken the lead in the Constructors’ Championship. A job well done by everyone,” Lando Norris added.
Norris managed to cut Max Verstappen's lead in the Drivers' Championship by a further three points in Baku as he trails the latter by 59 points with seven races and three sprints remaining in the 2024 season.
