Lando Norris feels that one thing that he didn't feel too proud about by his actions in the F1 Hungarian GP was the fact that after the race there was less talk about McLaren getting a '1-2' finish or Oscar Piastri winning his first race. The race in Hungary was the team's first '1-2' finish since 2021.
Having said that, the story after the race was not the fact that McLaren had secured a '1-2' finish or that Oscar Piastri had picked up his first career win, it was the team radio debacle. On the last round of pitstops, the team gave Lando Norris the first call to prevent the threat of an undercut from Lewis Hamilton. When Oscar pitted as well, he came out behind Lando.
It was at this moment that McLaren asked Lando Norris to switch the positions again but the British driver was reticent as he would have to cede the win. After much deliberation and back and forth between the driver and his race engineer, Lando gave up the position to Oscar Piastri.
Due to the entire strategic debacle, McLaren faced a lot of backlash for putting the drivers in an impossible position. Reflecting on the weekend, Lando Norris felt that he didn't really care what others thought about his actions in the race. The only thing that he was not too proud of was the fact that the news on the next day was not about Oscar Piastri's first win or the team's '1-2' finish. He told Motorsport,
“Whether people on the outside think and kind of come up with their own stories of what happened, and what I would have done and wouldn't have done, that kind of thing, I don't mind about that. But it's the things that I could have done: the fact that I kind of clouded over Oscar's first race win in F1 is something I've not felt too proud about."
He added,
“The fact we had a 1-2, and that was barely a headline after the race. The fact we had a 1-2 and nothing was really spoken about it from that side. Yeah, that's the bits I felt worse about."
Lando Norris on how he could have dealt with the situation differently
Lando Norris felt that he could have easily dealt with the situation in a far more mature manner by just letting Oscar Piastri through on the very first lap and then racing him for the win. McLaren never called off the fight for the win and the two drivers could have easily battled after the positions were switched. Lando said,
“Just let him pass straight away. It's such a stupid thing that I didn't, because we're free to race. I could have just let him pass, still tried to overtake and to race him. It sounds so simple now, but it's not something that went through my head at the time."
He added,
“It’s such a simple thing like that. You know, I could have done it, but I was just in a good rhythm, and things were going well at the time. So I questioned the team a few times."
Lando Norris will be looking to bounce back from the weekend in Hungary and try to secure a win in Spa this weekend.
