Lewis Hamilton has expressed his support for English footballer Bukayo Saka. The Arsenal winger was presented as the face of defeat by the British media following England's recent loss to Iceland.
In the build-up to the Euro 2024, England faced off against Iceland in a friendly on June 7 at Wembley Stadium. The home favorites lost the game to Iceland, conceding a goal during the 12th minute.
Saka, who stepped in as a substitute in the second half of the game, was staged as the face of defeat by major British newspapers and tabloids. The scapegoating from the media received major backlash from football fans, with Lewis Hamilton extending his support to the Arsenal star.
Hamilton took to Instagram and shared a message uploaded by the VERSUS social media page. The message condemned racial discrimination against British footballers and called out the media for vilifying athletes from the black community.
"We need to hold the English media accountable for systemically vilifying black players. The constant scapegoating of black players needs to stop. This endemic racial discrimination has no place in football, yet countless news outlets suggest otherwise..." the message read.
Lewis Hamilton has always voiced his support against racial discrimination. Last year, the Mercedes driver similarly expressed support for Vinicius Jr. after the Real Madrid star faced racist abuse in a La Liga match.
Exploring Lewis Hamilton's favorite Premier League team
As a kid, Hamilton's interest in Premier League teams switched between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. In an interview with Sky Sports in 2022, the seven-time world champion revealed his early interest in football and how he supported the Spurs and the Red Devils.
"I really wanted to fit in – I was the only kid of colour there but I know that the kids all supported someone different – one was Tottenham, one was Man United," he said.
Hamilton also shared how his sister forced him to switch his allegiance to Arsenal.
"I remember switching between these teams when I was younger and getting home and my sister punching me several times in the arm, beating me and saying, ‘You have to support Arsenal’, so I remember at five or six years old, that I became a supporter of Arsenal."
Lewis Hamilton came very close to owning a stake in the PL team, as he made a bid to buy rivals Chelsea F.C. However, his bid wasn't successful.
