Nico Rosberg has come out in support of Lewis Hamilton ahead of the 2024 British Grand Prix. Despite George Russell's pole advantage, the former arch-rival of the seven-time world champion has shared that he is rooting for the latter in an all-Mercedes front-row lockout on Sunday.
Saturday's British GP qualifying saw Russell, Hamilton, and Lando Norris qualify in the top three positions, making it an all-British top starting line-up in front of their home crowd at Silverstone, United Kingdom.
While Russell and Hamilton are heavy favorites to win the race, one would not keep Norris out of it either after his Austrian GP debacle. Verstappen, who starts the race from P4, is another contender for the race win, but Rosberg has Hamilton as his favorite.
During an interview with Sky Sports F1, Rosberg was asked if one of the three British drivers could win the race or if Verstappen would win again. Answering this, he said:
"Is anybody up for Lando Norris? There you go. Mercedes? Okay. [But] I'm gonna go for Lewis Hamilton today because I think Mercedes are looking really good and his race pace here, I remember it, because I had to compete against that. It's really really strong on this track. So somehow I feel maybe he can do the Lewis magic."
Statistically, Lewis Hamilton is the most successful F1 driver around this circuit. He holds the record for most race wins (eight), podiums, and pole positions at Silverstone.
Lewis Hamilton wary of Lando Norris' threat
Lando Norris in the McLaren has of late been a force to be reckoned with. The British driver finished the race within the top five in the last eight races (keeping aside the Austrian DNF). His podium count is six in 11 races and he currently stands P2 in the driver's championship.
Lewis Hamilton, however, is already aware of the threat Norris poses to him and Mercedes. To tackle this, he has devised a plan to keep the McLaren driver behind and is eyeing a 1-2 finish with George Russell.
“I think, ultimately, there was still time left on the table, which George was able to find (in Qualifying), but I feel really confident about the car tomorrow. I think with the [weather] conditions we have, we can work together to keep Lando behind.”
Oscar Piastri, Nico Hulkenberg, and Carlos Sainz will start the race from P5, P6, and P7, respectively. Lance Stroll, Alex Albon, and Fernando Alonso complete the top ten on the starting line-up.
