“Logan is here because he is fast”: Williams boss gives vote of confidence to rookie Sargeant amidst Mick Schumacher rumours

Williams boss satisfied with Sargeant's performance

Williams team principal, James Vowles feels that Logan Sargeant, one of the rookies on the grid this year, is fast enough but just needs more experience. He is one of the only two drivers to have not scored any points until now but Vowles seems to be delighted with his pace and consistency.

The highest finish that Sargeant has in the first five rounds of the season is P12. It has only gone down ever since, which also includes a DNF during the Australian Grand Prix. However, Vowles is confident about his performance, as he said:

"Logan is here because he is fast, and he is fast. But he needs to get everything under control and drive clean. In both qualifying sessions in Baku, he reached Q2. That’s consistency, that’s what you need. I have already explained to him that he is fast enough. He needs to use Q2 to double his experience."

Meanwhile, Mick Schumacher was let go by Haas after racing for two seasons with them. It was mentioned that his performance was quite not close to what the team expected. However, he didn't go off the paddock as Toto Wolff signed him into Mercedes as their reserve driver.

It was speculated that given Sargeant's performance, Schumacher might replace him at Williams, however, that doesn't seem to be the case in Vowles' mind.

Williams boss reveals Logan Sargeant close to Albon in terms of pace

The Miami Grand Prix was Logan Sargeant's first Formula 1 home race, at least one of the three that will be held this season. But it turned out to be rather disappointing for him since he was the last one to cross the chequered flag.

However, Vowles pointed out that he was still pretty much close to Albon's pace, which is not even Sargeant's target this season. He said:

"I don’t expect him to match Alex’s pace. Besides, he’s had a series of circuits he’s never been to. But even as disappointed as he was (in Miami), there was only three-tenths between him and Alex. It happened to be a difference of seven positions then. But three-tenths, that’s how close it is now."

Logan Sargeant was called to Williams after they parted ways with Nicholas Latifi. It was announced in late November of 2022 that the Formula 2 driver will be driving alongside Alex Albon in the upcoming season. He is also the only American driver on the grid and one of the younger ones.
