Williams Racing driver Logan Sargeant dismissed the claims made by former F1 driver Marcus Ericsson who suggested that the former was not talking to his team principal. Sargeant further stated that Ericsson's statements don't "carry any weight."
Ericsson claimed on the Viaplay F1 podcast earlier this week that Sargeant and his team boss James Vowles are currently not on good terms. He also said that the American driver "does not have fun" with the team.
"I was also told this weekend by some American friends who know Sargeant, that he doesn’t have fun in that team," Ericsson said.
"He thinks it’s really hard, and apparently he and James Vowles don’t even talk with each other anymore. They barely greet each other. It’s completely cut off between them."
Logan Sargeant, however, snapped back at these statements. Speaking ahead of the 2024 F1 Belgian Grand Prix, he claimed Ericsson had a "reputation" for not talking to people in real life before making statements about them.
"Marcus Ericsson has a reputation of talking about other people without ever even having a conversation with me in his life," Sargeant said. "So yeah, it doesn’t carry any weight. It’s not true."
He added that he had conversed with Vowles earlier the same day and claimed he did not plan to speak with Ericsson.
"I just had a conversation here with James 20 minutes ago. And most importantly, me and James, we both come here and we want to do the best for the team, we both work in the same direction for what is best for the team, and ultimately, what is best for the team is best for me. So it’s just completely untrue."
"I’ve never spoken to [Ericsson] in my life, so I don’t plan on it either way."
Sargeant has raced with Williams since the 2023 season, however, his performance has been rather questionable. This has raised speculation about his replacement for next season.
Is 2024 set to be Logan Sargeant's final F1 stint? Race results spike speculation of the American's replacement
Although Williams is not in a very competitive state right now, they have managed to score four points in the season so far. However, they all have come from Alex Albon as his teammate Logan Sargeant is yet to score a point this season.
Sargeant has only scored one point in his F1 career so far - at the Circuit of The Americas in 2023. Although he finished that race outside of the points as well, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc's disqualification after the end of the race promoted him to P10.
The 23-year-old has not quite performed at his teammate's level in his career so far. Comparing their laptimes in Hungary last week, Albon went faster than him for most of the race.
These performances have led to the speculation that the team might replace him next season. For a team like Williams, it is important to have a competitive pairing of drivers who can extract the most out of their cars.
