Logan Sargeant is possibly at risk of getting sacked mid-season in 2024 by Mercedes prodigy Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Team principal James Vowles hinted at giving the junior driver a chance to race before the 2025 F1 season.
Williams Racing will see a slight change in their driver lineup next season. Carlos Sainz, who is set to be replaced by Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, was signed by the Grove-based team earlier this week. Logan Sargeant will no longer be a part of the team following the end of this season.
However, James Vowles recently hinted towards giving Formula 2 driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli a test this season. When Formu1a.uno asked Vowles about him, he said:
"It’s not like Toto is forcing him on us, no. To be honest, I’d rather give Logan the chance to be successful. But if we can make the car faster, and we will make it faster, then I have a responsibility to make sure we finish as high in the championship as possible."
"If Logan can deliver at that point, that’s great. If he doesn’t, then I have to rethink my options."
This could also possibly mean that Antonelli might replace Logan Sargeant early in the team. The latter's performance has been disappointing so far in the season. He has only scored one point in his F1 career so far and is yet to score this season.
"I'm 100% committed": Carlos Sainz on joining Williams, replacing Logan Sargeant
The Spanish driver has raced with Ferrari since the 2021 Formula 1 season and has pulled in three wins (the only three in his F1 career). He remained a competitive driver within the top five throughout his time on the team.
Before the start of this season, however, Ferrari announced that they were set to sign Lewis Hamilton, who would replace Sainz in the team. After this, the latter's options for other teams revolved around Red Bull, Mercedes, and even Audi. Ultimately, he settled with Williams.
Replacing Logan Sargeant in the team, Sainz is expected to be a strong pair with Alexander Albon, who has gained plenty of experience on the track. Joining the team, he stated that he is fully committed and confident with his choice for the future.
"I am fully confident that Williams is the right place for me to continue my F1 journey and I am extremely proud of joining such a historic and successful team, where many of my childhood heroes drove in the past and made their mark on our sport," Sainz said in a statement.
"I'm 100% committed and confident that Williams is the right place."
Williams is currently not in a very competitive state, having scored four points. With Sainz and Albon in the team next year, they would have a competitive pair to perform better in the championship.
