Logan Sargeant and Williams team principal James Vowles are reportedly no longer in talking terms with each other. This was reported after several rumors emerged that Sargeant could soon be replaced due to his poor on-track performances.
As per the "Pit Debrief", Logan Sargeant and Williams F1 team boss James Vowles are no longer speaking to each other as the team searches for other drivers to replace the American.
The American youngster joined F1 back in 2023 with Williams. In his rookie year, Sargeant struggled quite a lot and could only score one point in his home race in Austin. He retired from seven races due to various reasons. Despite struggling, James Vowles supported him during several interviews and media sessions.
Even in 2024, however, Logan Sargeant was unable to pull himself up. In the first 12 races of the season, he couldn't score a single point and retired from two races.
In the Australian GP, he was benched by the British team since his more experienced teammate, Alex Albon, drove Sargeant's car after destroying his own in FP3. This was because Williams had no extra chassis at their disposal if a driver crashed. Coming into the Japanese GP, Sargeant used Albon's repaired F1 car, but crashed it in FP1, giving the team more work before the main race.
All these issues and Sargeant's subpar performance triggered the team to search for a replacement driver.
Drivers like Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainz, and even Valtteri Bottas emerged as potential replacements. As of now, the British team will continue with Sargeant, but reports have emerged that they could replace him mid-season.
James Vowles hinted that Logan Sargeant could be replaced mid-season in 2024
Williams team boss James Vowles spoke about Logan Sargeant's recent on-track performances and his future with the team.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he clarified that the American is eager to help the team and perform much better than he already is. However, Vowles said that there could come a time when Williams will have to make a bold decision, either in 2025 or in the middle of the 2024 F1 season.
“He [Sargeant] knows that he wants to be there – he wants to perform. He wants to be there, and I want to give him every opportunity I can. But there will be a line in the sand when we have to make a decision at that point – both for ’25 and maybe for something this year. But we’re not there today," Vowles said.
Vowles then explained that his priority was to fix the issues in the car, and then assess the drivers and any other issues that could be costing them.
“My priority at the moment is – let’s sort out the car because we have underperformed in that area. Not Logan, not Alex. Once we have a car at the right performance, then let’s assess what we are costing ourselves and if we are costing ourselves,” he added.
As of now, Logan Sargeant has not scored a single point, while Alex Albon is in 17th place with four points.
