Reigning F1 world champion Max Verstappen has expressed his unwavering devotion to Dutch football club PSV Eindhoven, stating that he would willingly forgo winning any F1 races for an entire year if it meant witnessing his beloved PSV secure Champions League glory.
This extraordinary declaration came during a press conference following the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. When posed with the hypothetical choice between a year of F1 mediocrity and PSV's triumph in the Champions League, the Dutch-Belgian driver didn't hesitate.
“In that case, I don’t win a race for a whole year and PSV win the Champions League,” he said.
Currently dominating the Dutch league, the Eredivisie, PSV has secured victory in all nine of its domestic matches. However, their performance in the UEFA Champions League has been less impressive, with the team languishing at the bottom of their group after suffering defeats in their first two matches.
For Max Verstappen and countless other diehard PSV supporters, the dream of witnessing the club clinch the coveted Champions League title would need a dramatic reversal of their fortunes in the tournament.
What other football teams does Max Verstappen root for?
In addition to his allegiance to PSV, the Dutchman has also professed his support for English Premier League powerhouse Manchester United.
While he clarified that he isn't an avid United fan when speaking to Talk Sport earlier this year, he revealed maintaining close ties with fellow countryman and star defender Virgil van Dijk, as well as other Liverpool players.
"Oh no! Yes, well I'm a United [supporter]. Well, it's not like I'm a die-hard United fan, I talk to Virgil as well and [other] Liverpool players," he had said.
The Red Bull driver secured a historic 15th victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix, solidifying his third consecutive F1 World Championship title.
With the championship secured, Max Verstappen's willingness to forego F1 success for a season attests to the profound significance he places on PSV's potential Champions League aspirations.
