Max Verstappen recently talked about how he won't waste any time and energy looking at how Red Bull's rivals are progressing. This was his statement after winning his 61st Grand Prix in Spain.

Though Verstappen continued his domination in the first half of 2024, teams like Ferrari and McLaren have significantly closed the gap to Red Bull, challenging them in certain circuits. Despite the challenge posed by the likes of Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc, the defending world champion has managed to keep the lead in the drivers' championship table.

In the Spanish GP, Max Verstappen fought McLaren's Lando Norris both on track and through team strategies. The Dutchman eventually won the race and extended his lead in the title fight.

In the post-race press conference, Max Verstappen was asked for his thoughts on Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton progressing towards the top of the table. He initially stated that it all depended on what kind of upgrades each team brings in the near future.

However, he quickly stated that he is more focused on improving his own team and setup, rather than looking at what other teams are doing.

"It all depends on what the teams are going to bring to their car. I mean, I cannot look into what they're doing at the moment. The only thing that I can control is within our team, what we are going to bring. And that's what I'm focused on," Verstappen said.
"Of course, you can dream about potential improvements from other teams, but that's just a waste of energy. So I'm just very busy on trying to optimize my package and try to make it better, discussing a lot of things with the engineers and try to find solutions to stay on top," he added.

Max Verstappen urges Red Bull to find pace in RB20 as he shows support for Sergio Perez

After being beaten by Lando Norris in the Spanish GP qualifying session, Max Verstappen urged Red Bull to find more pace in the RB20.

According to Motorsport.com, the three-time world champion said that he had expressed his concerns to the team and they are aware of the work they have to do. He also pointed out that the Austrian outfit is not churning out enough upgrade packages when compared to other teams like Ferrari and McLaren.

"I have been saying for weeks that we need to bring more performance to our car and everyone in the team knows that as well. So far, it looks like everyone around us is bringing more updates than we do. Of course, we have to work on that, we find more performance for our own car as well," Verstappen said.

He also added that the fact that Sergio Perez's Spanish GP qualifying performance proved that Red Bull's RB20 still needed work. Max Verstappen showed support towards the Mexican driver and said that he does not think Checo's performance has dipped.

"At the moment we just lack some speed. The gap to Checo [Perez] is pretty big and I think that says a lot, because I don't think Checo has become worse," he added.

After winning the Spanish GP, Max Verstappen extended his lead in the drivers' championship table with a total of 219 points. Sergio Perez is down in fifth place with 111 points.
