Three-time reiging F1 champion Max Verstappen made a bold claim about his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. The Red Bull duo hit the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the game "F1 23" ahead of the 2024 F1 Spanish Grand Prix, which is scheduled for June 23.
Red Bull ace Max Verstappen has established himself as one of the most successful driver on the F1 grid in recent years. The Dutchman, 26, has won three consecutive F1 Drivers' Championships so far.
While Verstappen's remarkable driving skills and high-performance Red Bull cars have been instrumental in his success, he has consistently highlighted the pivotal role played by his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase.
A former Jordan engineer who worked with the likes of Sergio Perez and Paul di Resta in his early days, Lambiase joined Red Bull in 2015. The Italian-British engineer was immediately paired up with the then-Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat. Lambiase retained his position upon Max Verstappen's arrival when he replaced Kyvat.
Since being paired together, the duo has guided the Red Bull team to unparalleled success. The two were enjoying EA Sports game F1 23 ahead of the race in Montmelo and a video of the same was released by Red Bull Racing on their YouTube channel. Verstappen made a striking prediction about their potential as a driver-engineer duo in real-life competition. He said:
"I think if there's a competition between driver and engineer together competing in F1, I think we'd win!
Lambiase responded with a smile,
"You think so?"
To which Verstappen reaffirmed, "Yeah!"
Max Verstappen optimistic of Spanish GP as F1 calendar returns to Europe
Coming off a victory at the Canadian GP despite missing out on pole, Red Bull and Max Verstappen are looking forward to the next race in Spain. The Dutchman is eagerly anticipating the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix, a venue that holds special significance for him, as it was the site of his maiden F1 victory in 2016.
In a preview released by Red Bull, Verstappen shared his thoughts on the upcoming race, saying:
"We are back to the European races for a while now and I have been with the Team at the factory this week preparing for the Spanish Grand Prix, being the first race of a busy triple header."
Verstappen added:
"We are aiming to keep the momentum going from Canada, so we are looking forward to racing this weekend and hopefully have some good weather!"
Max Verstappen will enter the race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as the two-time defending champion. He currently leads the F1 Drivers' standings after nine races with 194 points to his name, 56 ahead of second-placed Charles Leclerc. The Dutchman has so far amassed six race wins and seven podium finishes.
