Former F1 world champion Damon Hill opined that Lewis Hamilton was due a 'bit of good luck' after he inherited the Belgian GP race win from his Mercedes teammate George Russell on Sunday. The seven-time world champion was one of the standout drivers in the main race as he took the race lead starting from P3 and controlled it from the front.

The British had covered every possible threat from his rivals behind him but was caught out by Russell's one-stop masterclass. He had multiple opportunities to pass him in the final three laps, but the 39-year-old could not do so despite being on hard tires that were around 20 laps fresher than his teammate, and crossed the line in P2.

But Hamiton got the race win handed to him after the FIA disqualified Russell for having an underweight car at the end of the Belgian GP. Damon Hill gave his take on the race at the Spa-Francorchamps, writing on his social media:

"Really bad luck for George who did everything right. Lewis has benefited and maybe he's due a bit of good luck? Life is full of surprises, which is how we like it. Just to add, I won the Belgian GP in 1994 at Brussels Airport, where I am now! Michael's plank was too thin."

Lewis Hamilton gives his take on W15's performance at the Belgian GP

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton stated that there had been a 'night and day' difference between the W15's performance with the upgrades on Friday and without the upgrades on Sunday.

In his post-race press conference, the seven-time world champion spoke about the performance shift:

"It was literally night and day different today. On Friday, it was pretty disastrous for both of us and really struggling with balance. And then today, the car came alive and I was really surprised to, firstly, get into the lead and then be pulling away from everyone and not...

"Yeah, as I said, it felt fully under control and I've not had that for years and so that's why it was also a bit of a strange way to finish it. but it's great to go into the summer break with the one-two. The team did really deserve it and did such an amazing job," he added.

After getting the win on Sunday, Hamilton extended his lead over Sergio Perez and George Russell, solidifying his grip on P6 with 150 points, heading into the summer break.

It was also his second win in three races and third consecutive podium, having finished P3 in Hungary. However, Hamilton disagreed with the opinion that he could challenge Max Verstappen for the championship. The latter has almost double the number of points as Hamilton, with just 10 races and three Sprints remaining.
