The McLaren F1 motorhome got severely damaged after an overnight hailstorm caused havoc on the eve of the 2024 Hungarian GP. The Woking-based team, just like several others on the grid, had set up their motorhome ahead of the race weekend in Budapest.
The British team had also suffered a lot of damage to their motorhome in Barcelona last month when an electrical fire broke inside it during track action. They repaired the damaged motorhome just before their home race in Silverstone and were fully operational to entertain guests and team members for the weekend.
However, F1 photographer Kym Illman on his social media reported that McLaren sustained more damage to the motorhome when a severe hailstorm struck the paddock on Monday night before the race weekend and caused the roof to fall off. He said:
"#MclarenF1 can’t take a trick. Having just got their fire-damaged motorhome repaired in time for the Silverstone race, yesterday the roof was ripped off by storm winds. It was ripped off on Monday night as well. And a large video screen at the entrance to the pit lane has been brought down,"
"Heavy rain, accompanied by hail, lightning and strong winds flooded pit lane too with one F1 team crewmember jokingly swimming in the 20cm deep water."
McLaren F1 team boss previews the Hungarian GP this weekend
McLaren F1 team boss Andrea Stella stated that ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend they needed to assess their progress over the recent triple header where they found themselves in a winning position in each race.
As per PitPass, Stella said:
"With the British Grand Prix over, we're now past halfway into the 2024 season. It's a good time to reflect on how far we've come. Last week we took time to celebrate a successful triple header where we returned with three trophies and two Sprint race trophies,"
"However, there's more to be done. We're encouraged to keep improving to ensure we keep the pressure on the competition. We're prepared and looking forward to returning to the Hungaroring circuit."
McLaren are currently P3 in the Constructors' Championship and finds themselves just seven points behind Ferrari after 12 races and three Sprints this season, while Red Bull remain 79 points ahead on the standings.
Both the drivers had performed admirably in the 2023 edition of the Hungarian GP as well with Lando Norris finishing P2 behind Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri in P5 at the Hungaroring near Budapest. They arguably have the fastest car on the grid right now and have been competitive on every track ever since the Miami GP but have failed to capitalize on their opportunity and would look to change the narrative in Mogyorod.
