McLaren recently sent a goodie box to Mercedes, thanking them for providing help during the Spanish GP after a fire broke at the British team's motorhome in the paddock. The gift was given to the Silver Arrows ahead of the 2024 F1 British GP.
Like every other F1 race weekend, all teams set up their motorhomes at the paddock of the Spanish GP that took place from June 21 to 23. Though most of these team centers have all kinds of safety features, accidents can still occur. In Barcelona, it was McLaren's Team Hub that encountered a major issue.
On June 22, the British team's motorhome caught fire. The fire reportedly started in the hub's kitchen area, spreading through the building. Thankfully, everyone in the hub was evacuated quickly and no one was hurt in the incident. Firefighters and trucks arrived at the scene and quickly extinguished the fire.
Fast forward to the British GP, and Mercedes received a goodie box as a thank-you from the Woking-based team. There was also a letter from the British team's CEO, Zak Brown, in which he thanked Mercedes for accommodating McLaren's guests and assisting them during the incident.
The goodie box, uniquely shaped like a fire extinguisher, had several packets of orange-colored cookies. The cookie box and the letter from Zak Brown were photographed and posted on Mercedes' official X account. The Silver Arrows also thanked the British team for the gesture.
"To Team Mercedes, a big thank you for your offer of assistance to our team and guests over the Spanish GP weekend. It was very much appreciated and was a great example of the spirit of Formula 1. The fiercest competition on track, and the strongest community off it," wrote Zak Brown.
Lando Norris feels Mercedes could be as quick as McLaren at the British GP
Lando Norris recently spoke about Mercedes' performance jump at the 2024 F1 British GP. Speaking to F1.com, he explained that the Silver Arrows did not turn on their engine to the max during final runs, but believes that the cars can be as quick as McLaren.
“I think we’re pretty tight and even with probably Mercedes, they seem probably just as quick as us. They just didn’t turn up the engine and do as much in the final runs. I think we’re in a good place, but we definitely have a little bit more to find,” Norris said.
After the Austrian GP, McLaren stands in third place with 268 points, while Mercedes is in fourth with 196 points. With their newfound pace, the Silver Arrows could pick up big points in the coming races and start challenging other top teams.
