Mercedes F1 driver Lewis Hamilton was overjoyed after Arsenal FC's 3-1 win over Southampton on 5 October saw them stay third in the standings for the 2024-25 Premier League season. The seven-time world champion is a big supporter of the North London Club, despite attempts to buy their city rival, Chelsea FC, a couple of years ago.
The Gunners have been challenging for the championship for the past two seasons but come up short against the mighty Manchester City. They have once again started a season brightly. Besides the City, they are the only team that remains undefeated after seven games.
Their winning streak looked a bit in jeopardy after they went a goal behind on Saturday against Southampton after 54 minutes despite dominating the game. However, owing to their 'Starboy' Bukayo Saka's performance, scoring the third goal and setting up the first two, they claimed the three points.
Saka took to his social media platform, Instagram, to share an image of himself celebrating his goal at the Emirates Stadium with the crowd.
Lewis Hamilton took to his Instagram Stories to reshare the post and an emoji of the key indicating the importance of the young 23-year-old to Arsenal.
Lewis Hamilton reveals his love story with Arsenal FC
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton stated that he would describe himself as a 'sporting fan' and revealed that he was "forced" to support Arsenal FC by his sister in their childhood.
As per ESPN, the 39-year-old spoke about how his love affair with the Gunners began, saying:
"When I was young, around the corner from where I lived, I used to play football with all the kids and a couple of close friends at the time. I really wanted to fit in. I was the only kid of color there. I knew all the kids supported someone different, one was Tottenham Hotspur, and one was Manchester United."
"I remember switching between these teams when I was younger and getting home and my sister Sam punching me several times in the arm, basically beat me, saying 'You have to support Arsenal!' I remember 5, or 6 years old, I then became a supporter of Arsenal. But my Uncle Terry is a big Blues fan, so I've been to so many games with him to watch Arsenal and Chelsea play. Ultimately I'm a sporting fan -- it is the biggest sport in the world."
Last year at a GQ Sports event, Hamilton reconfirmed his allegiances for Arsenal FC and was asked if he was happy with the team's performances up to that point of the season. He replied that he was happy as he had "been waiting for this my whole life!”
Hamilton is currently sixth in the drivers' rankings in his last season with Mercedes. He will be a part of Ferrari from the 2025 season onwards.
