Fernando Alonso experienced a turbulent Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Sunday where he struggled with the pace, balance, and comfort throughout the race. Despite the discomfort, Alonso assured his team that he was going to finish the race at Interlagos, which he did when he came home in P14.
Sunday's Brazilian GP was one of the most chaotic races on the 2024 F1 calendar. Apart from multiple red flags, yellow flags, and cars running out, as many as five drivers retired from the race. Despite his struggles, Alonso was not one of them.
The Spanish driver qualified for Q3 earlier on Sunday. However, a crash in the session saw him fail to improve on his position. Notably, his teammate Lance Stroll also suffered another crash during qualifying. In the end, Alonso managed to start in P9.
Even though Alonso was fit to run, it was a race against time for Aston Martin mechanics, who had to prepare both cars before the scheduled race. They excelled at their job and brought both cars to the track in time.
"I will finish the race for the mechanics, who did an incredible job today, but my back is really hurting, guys. This bouncing is not normal," Fernando Alonso said on the team radio during the race.
Alonso's words came after Stroll had crashed out of the race. The Canadian driver lasted only 10 laps before he was done for the day. Aston Martin's race weekend did not go as planned as the team failed to earn any points.
Fernando Alonso dedicated his race finish to the mechanics and people of Valencia
Fernando Alonso, during his post-race interview, revealed that he finished the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace race to show respect to the mechanics and for people who were affected by the floods in Valencia.
"Under normal conditions, I wouldn’t have finished the race, but I had to do it for the mechanics, for myself too, since I struggled a bit before getting here; and, above all, for the people of Valencia: for so many people who were in far worse situations than the bouncing I felt today," Alonso added.
"We had a lot of issues with the brakes, especially at each restart, when all the brakes shifted to the rear; it was like pulling the handbrake in the corners. So you could say it wasn’t an ideal race in that sense. We have to improve for the next race."
Aston Martin left Brazil without any points scored. The team is currently placed fifth in the constructors' championship with 86 points after 21 races and five Sprints.
