Former Red Bull employee Dan Drury, known as Enginemode11 as an online streamer, spoke on a podcast appearance from 2022 about what the Red Bull advisor, Helmut Marko is really like. Drury worked as a Senior Systems Engineer for the team and had some contact with the Austrian boss at RBR.
As an advisor, Marko has been a key part of its success since it joined the grid in 2005. During his time with the Austrian team, he has recognized the talents of Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel, who have eight World Drivers' Championship titles between them. Both were promoted to F1 under his tutelage when he was in charge of the junior program. Red Bull has also won six constructors' championship titles with the Austrian in the background.
Along with the success he's brought, Marko has also become known as a strict individual, especially when it comes to his drivers. Speaking on the podcast The Last Lap, Drury was asked about whether the reputation that Marko has as someone to be feared is true or not, to which he replied:
“My limited interactions with Helmut left me questioning my existence. Yeah he's got the the ‘Bond villain’ all nailed down. So yeah, he's just mildly terrifying." [5:50]
Late last year, Marko was a key part of New Zealand driver Liam Lawson's promotion to the Red Bull team. From his brief stints in the RBR sister team of Visa Cash App RB, Lawson is another junior driver under Marko's tutelage who is getting an opportunity to race for the top team.
Ex-employee says the Red Bull car changes very quickly during development
Dan Drury, who left the team at the end of 2021, was asked on the podcast whether he had seen the 2022 car before departing. Although he acknowledges seeing it at one stage in the development, the car during the season varies over the months before it gets on track. When asked about the RB18, he said:
“I saw a wind tunnel model and it looked absolutely nothing like it does now.” [1:13]
Drury goes on to say that he saw the wind tunnel model in November of 2021, which was three months before the pre-season testing session in Bahrain.
The RB21, Red Bull's 2025 car, will launch on February 18.
