F1 fans were left miffed when McLaren driver Lando Norris gave an unusual reply to Lewis Hamilton's assessment of the Woking-based team's performance at the 2024 Hungarian GP on Sunday (July 21). It was a slightly odd day for the iconic British team as they finished 1-2 in Budapest as they had started at the beginning, but they found themselves imposing team orders on their drivers.
Oscar Piastri took his maiden F1 win in odd circumstances as the McLaren F1 had to plead with his teammate to move over and follow team orders to get the victory. The situation overshadowed a dominating showing from the British team at the Hungaroring.
In the cooldown room after the race, Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton had an unusual exchange as well as the Mercedes driver gave his take on McLaren's performance, remarking:
"Whoo, you guys are fast [to Norris and Oscar Piastri]"
To which Norris replied:
"Yeah, well, you had a fast car seven years ago."
Hamilton questioned the statement:
"Seven years ago? That's a long time. Were you here seven years ago?"
Norris claimed:
"You know, you had a quick car. You made the most of it, now it's us."
Hamilton finally concluded:
"I wasn't complaining, I was just complimenting you on your car."
F1 fans took to social media to give their reactions to the exchange between Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton on X. One fan claimed that the young Brit should have taken out his frustration on his team and not the seven-time world champion:
"There was no reason to talk with Hamilton like this. He should be unhappy with his own team."
"This guy is salty that Oscar beat him," commented another fan.
Another fan mulled:
"No wonder he gets along well with Crashtappan."
"Not sure why the dig tbh," said a confused fan.
"He really is not a nice kid. Entitlement, he really believes in his own entitlement. A spoilt brat," wrote another.
Lando Norris gives his take on the team orders in Budapest
McLaren driver Lando Norris stated that he lost the win at the start to his teammate and not when he was told to give his race lead to the Aussie.
In his post-race press conference, the 24-year-old said:
"I mean, I didn't give up the race win. I lost the race win off the line. So I know everyone is going to want to say that as a story that I gave up the race when I didn't.
"I boxed first and naturally, you’re always going to undercut. So the team gave me this position and I gave it back. Nothing more than that," he added.
Lando Norris closed the gap to Max Verstappen in the Driver's Championship to 76 points as he moved closer to P1.
