Adrian Newey reportedly visited Aston Martin's Silverstone factory and "talks" are supposed to be underway. This comes at a time when the outgoing Red Bull aero wizard is being linked with many of the top teams for his future in the sport.
Aston Martin had a very promising start to the 2023 F1 season; however, their form wore out by the end as they finished fifth in the championship. The start of the current season has not shown any improvement either. Although the team introduced a few new upgrades, they are not quite on par with the top teams. They were closing on Mercedes for fourth place in the earlier races, but the gap between the teams is now very large.
Meanwhile, Red Bull announced that Adrian Newey is set to leave the team by the first quarter of 2025. As such, this is an amazing opportunity for some of the other teams since Newey's work on the aerodynamics of the car has given unrealistic results over the years. Earlier, he was linked with Aston Martin but the speculations did not gain any traction. Now, Dutch journalist Erik Van Haren reports that Newey visited their facility in Silverstone, which gives the situation an interesting angle.
How can Aston Martin capitalize on their performance from Adrian Newey?
The 2025 F1 season is set to be the last one before the new regulations kick in. Around the same time, Newey is set to leave Red Bull and perhaps join a different team. Given that every team will have a blank slate for the 2026 season, a season's worth of time would be ideal for him to plan the car.
The regulations for 2026 were recently revealed and the cars have been changed drastically. More power in the engine will be drawn from the electrical components, and the cars will have major reliance on aerodynamics. The first season is going to be a hit-and-try for the teams to extract the maximum performance, and Adrian Newey's experience could be of great help.
Money is seemingly not an issue for Aston Martin. If they manage to make an attractive offer to Newey, he might consider joining them, and it will be a huge opportunity for them to become a contender at the top of the championship.
Interestingly, Business F1 Magazine reported earlier that Adrian Newey had signed a $105 million deal with Ferrari and is set to start working with them in 2025. However, nothing has been officially confirmed as of now.
