Ferrari F1 team shared a social media post as Lewis Hamilton officially started his stint as its driver in the 2025 season. The British driver surprised everyone in the world of motorsport last year, as he announced his switch to the Italian team from Mercedes before the start of the 2024 season.

The seven-time F1 world champion had a rough two years before 2024 in the current regulations as he failed to win a race and got only one pole position. However, he signed a contract extension with the German team in August 2023 for two years after rejecting the advances of the Maranello-based outfit.

But, Hamilton decided to activate his release clause in his new contract to make the move to Ferrari in 2025 on a multi-year deal. On the first day of the new year, Ferrari on their social media platform, X, posted about Hamilton as he begins his journey with them, saying:

"Perfect time for a follow @LewisHamilton."

Despite winning two races in 2024 in Silverstone and Spa, there have been a few questions surrounding the 39-year-old's form and racing pedigree with many even questioning the Italian team's decision to sign him.

But as per GrandPrix247, former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve defended Hamilton and said:

“You can’t regret picking Lewis (and letting Sainz leave). Ferrari has been working on Leclerc for so long now; it was always going to be Sainz who leaves. He would have known that. We’ll see how Ferrari performs, but you can never regret picking Lewis.”

Former F1 world champion predicts Lewis Hamilton's time with Ferrari

Former Williams F1 driver and 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve stated that it was "difficult" to predict Lewis Hamilton's first year with Ferrari as the team emerged as a "surprise package" in 2024.

As quoted by the aforementioned source, the Canadian said:

"It’s a bit of a difficult one. Ferrari was the surprise package during the later stages of the season and obviously has a car that is competitive, easy enough to drive, and that the drivers can play around with a little bit. It just depends on how he gets to that first race in Melbourne.
"If he gets there, feeling loved by the team and sitting in a car that works for him, we will see marvels. If it’s difficult, we may see the same problems he’s had in recent years, and there could be some self-doubt by the time the season ends. Hopefully, the move to Ferrari will give him a fresh start."

Lewis Hamilton will race for the Ferrari F1 team until the end of the 2026 season at least alongside Charles Leclerc, who has signed on for the Italian team on a long-term contract.
