Red Bull team principal Christian Horner brought Lando Norris telemetry data to discuss his incident with Max Verstappen which resulted in the latter getting two separate 10-second penalties during the Mexican Grand Prix. The two championship rivals were involved in an intense battle In the first few laps of the race after the safety car period.
In his bid to get ahead of the three-time world champion, Norris first made the move outside of Turn 4, which resulted in both drivers banging wheels, with the former going on the grass and getting ahead of the Dutch driver.
But the 27-year-old retaliated by diving down the inside before the snake-like esses, which took both him and the McLaren driver out of the track, with Verstappen taking the position. However, the race stewards were not happy with Max Verstappen's moves and gave him two separate 10-second penalties for his battle against Lando Norris.
In his post-race interviews with the media, Christian Horner was seen bringing out the McLaren driver's telemetry data in his attempt to present the other side with pictures of the situation floating on social media.
Speaking with the media, the Red Bull team principal reflected by referring to the telemetry data and said (via Crash.net):
“If I show you here on the GPS - this is on the run down to Turn 4 - this is actually Lando versus Lando, and what you can see is that the orange line is Lando’s fastest lap of the grand prix, so the point he is braking for Turn 4 and then obviously executing the corner.
“What you can see, is that on lap whatever it was [10] that’s been the incident with Max, he is 15 kilometers an hour faster, and later on the brakes than his fastest lap of the grand prix. He wouldn’t have made the corner. He would have run off track. You can see from his onboard steering."
Max Verstappen gives his take on the 20-second penalty during the Mexican GP
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen stated that he wasn't too affected by the 20-second penalties given to him by the race stewards, as he believed his main concern was around the pace of the RB20 during the main race.
Speaking with F1.com, the Dutch driver said:
“At the end of the day, if you agree with it or not, it doesn’t matter because the penalties are given. That was also honestly not my biggest problem of the race, my biggest problem was that we just had no pace. Just struggling a lot on the tires, couldn’t really attack, and I couldn’t follow Ferrari and McLaren.”
Max Verstappen eventually finished the race in P6 behind the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell and was able to limit the damage in the championship battle against Lando Norris, as he lost just 10 points.
