Some F1 fans recently reacted to Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc being ahead of Michael Schumacher in terms of the number of points scored from behind the wheel of a Ferrari. While Vettel and Leclerc are ahead of Schumacher, they have not won a championship with the Italian giants.
F1's official X (formerly Twitter) account recently posted a statistic about which driver has scored the most points in a Ferrari. The statistic shows Vettel at the top with 1400 points, Leclerc in second with 1212 points, and Fernando Alonso in third with 1190 points. Schumacher appears in fifth with 1066 points.
It is worth mentioning that when the new points system is taken into consideration, only then does Vettel have the highest points for Ferrari. Meanwhile, under the old points system, Schumacher would still be the top scorer for Ferrari.
Some F1 fans were left unimpressed by the comparison between Ferrari drivers, especially Vettel and Leclerc's points to Schumacher's. Another also questioned the baseline of the comparison.
"Pointless comparison," one fan wrote.
"I'm so confused. So what's the baseline used - old or new points system? Or is there no baseline?" another questioned.
One fan compared the two different points sytems, and how they affected the tallies:
"Stupid comparison! Berger, Lauda and Schumacher all raced for ferrari when a win only got you 10 points! If Schunacher had got 25 points for each of his wins he would be miles ahead on 2275 points and that’s just his wins! All other pojnts finishes would have put him well over 3000!" one explained.
Some fans posted their opinions about Lewis Hamilton joining the list. The seven-time world champion will join the Italian giants in 2025, replacing Carlos Sainz. A few fans speculated that Hamilton could beat Vettel to become the top scorer for the team.
"Lewis Hamilton will surpass all of them," a fan said.
"The goat will be on that list by the end of next season. Hopefully he’ll get WDC no. 9," another speculated.
"Next year Lewis Hamilton will set out in his Ferrari journey to break Sebastian Vettel’s record. 10,000 points is a magnificent team achievement!" a fan added.
Schumacher raced for Ferrari when the sport still had the old points system. From 1991 to 2002, only the top six drivers received points in the order of 10-6-4-3-2-1. Then, from 2003 to 2009, the sport increased the points down to eighth place and the revised order was 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
From 2010, however, there was a major revamp in the points system, giving drivers a lot more for finishing in the top spots. The new points system from 2010 to 2018 was 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. Vettel and now Leclerc have raced for Ferrari under this system.
Charles Leclerc recalls meeting Michael Schumacher in his formative years
Back in 2023, Charles Leclerc recalled him meeting Michael Schumacher for the first time.
In his biography "Le Prodige", Leclerc shared the story of meeting the seven-time world champion. The Monegasque met the German F1 legend when he was karting on the same track Schumacher was testing for F1. Leclerc recalled Schumacher talking to him and other junior karting drivers and signing their race suits.
“One day when I was karting, Michael Schumacher was doing some F1 test. It was a really special moment. I remember entering the paddock and we had the chance to meet him, it was very exciting. Fortunately, there were not a lot of people, so he took some time to talk to us," Leclerc said (via PlanetF1)
Leclerc also added that in that moment he had been completely focused on Michael Schumacher's red suit.
"He signed our suits and talked with us before going back to his garage. It was really sweet and I was very impressed. I don’t even remember what we were talking about because all I could focus on was his red suit. I never thought I would one day drive for the red team.”
After the 2024 F1 Belgian GP, Leclerc is in third place in the drivers' championship table with 177 points.
