Red Bull ace designer Adrian Newey has made it clear that the decision about his next move is not imminent, as he will take his time to decide what he wants to do in the future. The star designer was part of the Austrian team for almost 20 years, where he achieved a ton of success. His last creation, the RB19, is also on its way to winning another title with Max Verstappen this season.
This was precisely why it shocked everyone when Newey announced that he was leaving Red Bull. The decision came all of a sudden and contrary to a lot of reports of an approach from Ferrari being the reason, Newey has not announced where his future lies.
The star designer has since been linked with teams like Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, Aston Martin, and even Williams. There have been reports that Newey has rejected the offer from the Italian marquee team but other than that, there has been a lack of clarity on what he wants to do next in his career.
In an interview with The Times, Newey said that he wasn't surprised by the kind of interest he received from different teams when he announced he was leaving Red Bull. The star designer added, however, wants to sit back for a while and will not be making a quick decision. He said,
“It wasn’t a big surprise when other teams showed an interest after I announced I was leaving, but I won’t make a quick decision about my future. I need a break to work out if I want to have another go in F1. I also didn’t want to risk going stale."
Newey also touched on the fact that he'd wanted to work with drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in his career but somehow never had the opportunity to. He said,
“There are some drivers, like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, who I would have loved to work with, but so far it has not been the right place or time in terms of us coming together."
Adrian Newey is not sure what the future holds for him after Red Bull
Adrian Newey also admitted that he had no idea what the future held for him. The ace designer talked about how he had worked with some brilliant talents like Nigel Mansell and Max Verstappen, but what's next is a question he hasn't decided on as he finally gets to spend some time with his family during the summer break. He said:
“I got on extremely well with Nigel Mansell at Williams, even though he had a Marmite character, and Max Verstappen, who was a tremendous pleasure to work with at Red Bull."
He added:
“I don’t know what my future holds, but instead of dashing around the world to Grand Prix races this summer, I’ll be able to see my family. In June Mandy and I took our two Bernard doodles, Yogi and Benji, on a drive along the south coast for a week, which was great fun.”
The star designer has a resume filled with success. He's won titles with Red Bull in the last two decades, but even before that, he won titles with McLaren and Williams as well. Wherever he goes next, he's going to be a valuable addition.
