It is being reported that Red Bull might revert to the old spec of the RB20 to help Sergio Perez recover his form from the early part of the 2024 season. The Mexican driver started the season firing as he was able to get four podiums in the first five races of the season.

But ever since the Chinese GP, the 34-year-old has not stood on the podium and has slipped down in the standings owing to his poor performances and results. The Austrian team reportedly considered replacing him with Daniel Ricciardo or Liam Lawson during the summer break, even after they extended Perez's contract.

But as reported by "ESPN", Red Bull might revert to their old RB20 spec to help Sergio Perez rediscover his early season form and get him back on pace with his teammate Max Verstappen after the summer break.

Red Bull team advisor Helmut Marko too believed that the team could help turn around the six-time race winner's form and said (via ESPN):

"We believe that we can turn it round and make it more stable for him. To be a teammate to Max is not the nicest thing in Formula One. Checo has his merits, he's won races."
"Our discussion was not just about drivers, it was regular discussions we had of what can we do to improve the situation. We have to try to make the car more easy to drive," Marko added.

Red Bull advisor provides the reason for sticking with Sergio Perez

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko hinted that Sergio Perez's alternatives Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson did not do enough to sway the team's decision.

He said:

"Daniel was put in the car and if he would have been significantly faster than Yuki there was an idea to bring him back to Red Bull Racing. But he also had this up and down. So, so far, he didn't fulfill the criteria to be a Red Bull Racing driver."

While commenting on Liam Lawson's future with the Red Bull family, the Austrian remarked:

"It's a tough time for someone like Liam, especially as he jumped into the car under very, very difficult circumstances and did very well. We rate him high and he will get his chance. Just wait. September, you will have an answer."

Sergio Perez is currently P7 in the driver's championship with 131 points after 14 races and three sprints In the 2024 season. There is still a possibility that the Mexican driver might get replaced if he fails to recover his form and show significant improvements in results in the remaining 10 races and three sprints.

Red Bull would be reliant on Perez's results as they are only 42 points ahead of McLaren in the Constructor's Championship, with the Woking-based team looking like the most well-rounded car this year.
