Red Bull seems to be coming to a final decision with Sergio Perez after team principal Christian Horner's comments on the team "walking one-legged." Perez's string of disappointing performances continued in Hungary after crashing out in Q1.
It was widely speculated that RBR had allowed Perez two more races to regain form following a string of questionable performances. Two consecutive retirements, followed by two races out of the top 5, and a P17 in Silverstone, have been a huge hit to the team. Following that, he crashed out during the qualifying session of the Hungarian GP earlier today.
Following this race, team principal Christian Horner issued an interesting statement. When asked if the team was losing patience with Perez, he said:
"These kinds of discussions should happen internally, and not through the media, but it is clear that we cannot keep walking one legged."
Ferrari and McLaren are catching up with Red Bull for the Constructors' Championship. They are no longer the fastest car on the grid, and other teams are catching up with their pace; meanwhile, Perez's performances are not helping.
Red Bull taskmaster gives a deadline for Sergio Perez’s future decision
Red Bull's advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko, revealed that the team has given Sergio Perez a chance until the Belgian Grand Prix later this month. Post this, the decision regarding his future will be made, given his questionable performances in the recent races.
Perez was given a two-year extension with Red Bull earlier this season, following which his performance has seemingly taken a major hit. He finished out of the top five in two consecutive races and was P17 in Silverstone. It was the same race where his teammate Max Verstappen finished on the podium in P2.
These performances have been subject to criticism all over social media. It was also speculated that the team might consider terminating his contract extension in the future. Speaking on the same, Dr. Helmut Marko revealed earlier that the team will evaluate him till the summer break for two more races.
"We still hope that Sergio Perez regains his form. We will evaluate the situation after the next two races during the summer break and then we will see what happens," Marko wrote in his Speedweek column, via GPBlog.
While his performance has largely been affected, he is also digging a hole in the team's finances this season. He crashed consecutively in Monaco and Canada and had yet another major crash in the Hungarian GP's qualifying session earlier today.
