Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey recently shared when he could leave the Austrian team. Though the team announced that he could depart sometime in early 2025, the Brit recently mentioned a month when he would leave the defending world champions.
On May 1, 2024, the team announced that Adrian Newey would leave them after 19 successful years. Before and after the official announcement, many reports discussed which team Newey could join in the future. Teams like McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes, and even Aston Martin came up as potential destinations for him.
As of now, Newey has not confirmed which team he will join after leaving the Milton Keynes-based outfit. He still works with the F1 team and is currently focused on completing their first supercar, the RB17.
Speaking to Motorsport.com, Adrian Newey initially talked about how his job description changed after his departure from Red Bull was official. He then explained that even after he left the team, his son, Harrison Newey, who is RB17's customer manager, would continue to work actively.
Harrison Newey himself is a racing driver who has competed in BRDC Formula 4, F3 Championship, Asian Le Mans Series, European Le Mans, and more.
While speaking about how his son would continue to work on the supercar, he revealed that he would officially leave the team in March 2025.
"That will continue regardless of my physically being present. Because of the way we're doing and also my son Harry, he will continue to work on 17 through to its completion and indeed beyond when I stop working here in March next year. Then I will still be fully involved in working with the guys on queries and I'll be attending track tests and so on and so forth," Newey said.
Red Bull's chief car designer briefs about his job in F1 paddocks after his departure announcement
Red Bull aero wizard Adrian Newey recently talked about what his job is on an F1 paddock after his departure from the team was confirmed. After the official announcement about his exit, Newey visited the Miami, Monaco and British GPs with the defending world champions.
Speaking to Motorsport.com, he said that the major part of his on-paddock job is to talk with Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, contribute to race strategies, and meet RB17 customers.
"When I have been – so Miami and Monaco [and Silverstone] – then [it’s about] primarily talking to the drivers a little bit. And then a bit involved in strategy through the races. But it's also been meeting customers – 17 clients and customers," Newey said.
He explained how the RB17 project is closely matched to the F1 team itself, so much so that the project members are actively working for the team during race weekends as well.
"Because I think the point of this [building the RB17 with Red Bull Advanced Technologies] is it's very much an extension of the Formula 1 team. And everybody, therefore, is involved not only in the 17 itself, but in how Red Bull goes about Formula 1 weekends," he added.
Adrian Newey's RB17 was recently promoted and featured at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
