Red Bull's Helmut Marko has given his verdict on the raft of upgrades brought to the car and feels that they work as expected. The Austrian team has been caught on the back foot as the team has found it hard to develop the car at the same rate as its competition.
The season began with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez cruising to a comfortable "1-2" finish in Bahrain. There was, however, a big stumbling block waiting for the Austrian team when McLaren and Ferrari upgrades in the upcoming races closed the gap to the front. The race in Miami saw Lando Norris comfortably win, and from that point on, the battle at the front has been very close.
So much so that as the F1 Hungarian GP race weekend begins, Mercedes is the team on a two-race win streak, not Red Bull. The team brought a raft of upgrades to Budapest with hopes of making improvements to the car. That included a visibly different-looking engine cover for Max Verstappen, something that is reported to become a regular feature on the slow-speed tracks for the car.
The team had a decent run, with a P2 finish being the best result in both sessions. When questioned about the verdict on the upgrades by Motorsport.com, Red Bull's Helmut Marko claimed that the changes had worked as intended, he said:
"The conclusion is that the updates work. They were competitive, so we are confident for this weekend."
He did, however, clarify that Sergio Perez's car also had the bulk of the upgrades except the engine cover. He said:
"Checo actually has the same upgrade, except for one part. Only that part is the most noticeable. That's why people think that Checo doesn't have the upgrades, but he does have the vast majority. The difference in performance between the two cars is only marginal."
Red Bull looking good in Hungary: Helmut Marko
Red Bull's Helmut Marko also revealed that one of the areas where the team had struggled in general was the inability to make all the tires work as intended. This was one of the areas where he felt that the team was struggling. In Hungary, the team went through the entire range of tires and was able to make all of them work the way they intended to.
Marko was quite confident of what the weekend offered in Hungary and said:
"We did not win the last few races and the main problem was that we could not find the right balance straight away. We were not fast on all tyre compounds and not in all conditions. At McLaren that seemed to be the case regardless of the weather and regardless of the circuit. Of course it was extremely hot today, but we were good in every session."
Red Bull was surprisingly not the fastest car in Silverstone and not even the second fastest as McLaren and Mercedes battled it out amongst themselves for the honors. The team will be hoping to put the cat among the pigeons once again here and get back to winning.
