Red Bull Racing's Sergio Perez is set to have a new role in the team moving forward. The Mexican, who will not be part of the driver lineup for the next season will continue to be a part of the Austrian team during show runs, which are public displays of earlier models of Red Bull's cars. These events have previously occured in cities like Dallas, Mumbai, and Lima.
Perez's exit as a Red Bull Racing driver was confirmed earlier this week. He will be making way for 22-year-old driver Liam Lawson, who will be taking his spot. Speaking about his future with talkSPORT was team boss Christian Horner, who said (via PlanetF1):
"He’s still going to be involved with the team. He will be doing a couple of show runs with us during next year."
Perez has been with Red Bull since 2021 and helped them win the constructors' title in 2022 and 2023. While it was announced mid-season that he would continue with RBR for the next year and more after he signed a contract extension, his performances in 2024 have contributed to the team's decision to replace him. As Horner described it:
“He’s just had a really tough year this year and we sat down last week – we’d obviously been talking about it a little bit beforehand – and decided that it was right for both of us, just to step back, for him to step out of the car, take a bit of time with his family, work out what he wants to do."
Perez scored only 152 points as compared to his teammate Max Verstappen's total of 437 points. Speaking about how this points difference contributed to Red Bull's hopes for winning the constructors' championship this season, Horner said:
“He was 280 [sic] points behind his team-mate this year. We lost the constructors’ championship by just over 70 points, so he knew that by his own high standards he wasn’t achieving what he wanted or what we needed as a team."
Sergio Perez completed the season in eight place in the standings, his lowest since joing Red Bull Racing. His highest finish in the drivers' championship with RBR was second in the 2023 season.
