Sergio Perez remains unfazed by external noise, denying the speculation that he is facing the axe from Red Bull following his recent struggles in the RB20. Despite the heavily rumored summer break deadline to turn his season around, Perez is confident about retaining his seat.
After signing a two-year extension with the team, Perez's future has become increasingly uncertain following his poor performances. Multiple reports indicate that his contract includes performance clauses requiring him to stay within 100 points of his teammate, Max Verstappen, and five positions in the standings. Currently in sixth place, Perez is 137 points behind Verstappen.
Entering the doubleheader before the summer break, Sergio Perez admitted he was baffled by reports surrounding his future. Ahead of the Hungarian GP, the Mexican clarified that he was not facing a make-or-break doubleheader and reassured his long-term commitment to the team.
Perez emphasized that his results in the Hungarian and Belgian GP wouldn't affect his future with the team. Spanish journalist Tomás Slafer quoted him as saying:
"I don't understand why there is so much talk about me and my future. Nothing is going to change these two weekends, even if I win the race or even if I finish last. I have a contract with the team and I am going to fulfill it."
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Sergio Perez stated that he remains focused on overcoming his slump in performance. He addressed the speculation regarding his future and said:
"I'm just focused on what I have to do with the team to get us out of this and start scoring big points, which is what we need. All the rest is just external noise is normal for F1, probably in my case it is a little bit higher, but its just part of it."
Sergio Perez outlines his main objectives for the Hungarian GP
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner remarked that Sergio Perez's poor form was "unsustainable" for the team, as their chances of defending the Constructors' Championship decline each week, with rivals outscoring them.
Perez responded to the team principal comments from the British GP, admitting that he is also dissatisfied with the results. The Mexican claimed that returning to his old form is the top priority for the Hungarian GP.
"I think it’s obvious. I’m the first one that is not satisfied with the past races, with the past results, and I’m the one that wants to get back to our top form – that’s the main objective for us this weekend," he told Formula1.com
"We are all fully focused on the track and, at the end of the day, we know that this is a long season, there is a lot of races ahead. Things can change very quickly, so I’m fully focused," he added.
Sergio Perez also hopes to capitalize on the upgrades to the RB20 to return to the front of the grid and score big points. The Hungarian GP is scheduled for July 19-21.
