Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo's F1 future with Red Bull Racing hangs in limbo, as their unimpressive string of performances has forced the top bosses to reassess their driver lineup. Meanwhile, their junior drivers continue to impress, adding pressure on the veterans.
Perez's struggles in the RB20 have been amplified by rivals closing the gap to the reigning champions, diminishing their chances of defending the Constructors' title. On the other hand, Ricciardo has failed to outperform his younger teammate, Yuki Tsunoda consistently.
With the two veteran drivers struggling in the organization, the RB racing team could revert to its old purpose of training young drivers, with Helmut Marko confirming the same in Silverstone. According to a report from German outlet AMuS, Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar could drive for the team in 2025.
Lawson had impressed the team during his five-race cameo, subbing for Daniel Ricciardo last season. He was already promised an F1 seat in 2025, and the team is keen on promoting him to F1. Isack Hadjar has caught the attention of the top bosses with his recent performances in F2, taking the lead in the Drivers' standings.
An all-new driver lineup at RB would mean Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo vacating their seats, with the latter facing the axe. AMuS speculates a promotion for Tsunoda – currently in his fourth F1 season – to the Red Bull team replacing the struggling Sergio Perez.
For Daniel Ricciardo, this might not be the end of the road, as his long-time ally Christian Horner is said to be keen on retaining him. According to the report, Red Bull is also trying to negotiate with other teams to onboard the Australian. The future Audi outfit, led by Andreas Seidl – who signed Ricciardo at McLaren – is said to have "shown little interest" in hiring the veteran driver.
The flexible contract options at Red Bull and RB will facilitate any potential movements between the teams, as the top bosses continue to mull over their lineups for 2025.
Sergio Perez is working hard to improve his current form
Just months after signing a contract extension with Red Bull, Sergio Perez's future with the team remains uncertain. Coming out of a triple header, Perez admitted that the downtime has allowed him to step away from the "noise."
Perez has also been working hard to improve his form, having visited the Milton Keynes factory and remains optimistic about overhauling his poor form. During the Goodwood Festival of Speed, he said:
"While I have spent time with my family and trained hard, I have also been in the factory with my team, on the sim and analyzing how we improve this current period of form." Sergio Perez was quoted by RacingNews365.com.
"We always work together on solutions and that is what we have been doing, working as a team to overcome things," he added.
Multiple reports indicate that performance clauses in Sergio Perez's contract required him to stay within 100 points of Max Verstappen and five places of the reigning champion in the standings before the summer break. Despite holding sixth place, Perez is 137 points behind his teammate, with two races remaining.
