Young McLaren prospect Gabriel Bortoleto has issued a brutal verdict on Sergio Perez, as he feels the Mexican won't keep his seat at Red Bull. Bortoleto has become a part of the Woking-based squad's academy this season and has been impressive. He's second in the championship, and many think he could drive for the team in the future.
In a conversation with Motorsport.com, Bortoleto was questioned about Sergio Perez's future. The Brazilian feels Perez is performing up to the mark, so it's going to be very difficult for the experienced F1 veteran to keep his seat:
“I think Perez will be out next year. I don’t know if he has a contract, but with the results he’s having, he’s out.”
The Brazilian was also questioned on what the future holds for him, to which he said that McLaren have supported him well in his career. The driver said that he has a long-term contract with them and wants to drive for them someday:
“I have a contract with McLaren, I’m their junior driver, I have a long-term contract. But I also know that McLaren wants me to succeed and wants to see me in F1. They know that they have two very good drivers and they are preparing me to enter F1. And, one day, to be their driver, because that’s my dream.”
Red Bull trying to make car easier to drive for Sergio Perez - Helmut Marko
In a chat with ESPN, Red Bull boss Helmut Marko touched on the fact that the team is looking to help Sergio Perez. The Austrian opened up on how when you're Max Verstappen's teammate, it makes things harder, as the Dutch driver can handle a myriad of challenges with the car.
That's where Sergio Perez has a deficit, so Red Bull want to help him. Marko said:
"We believe that we can turn it round and make it more stable for him. To be teammate to Max is not the nicest thing in Formula One. Checo has his merits. He's won races."
He added:
"Our discussion was not just about drivers. It was regular discussions we had of what can we do to improve the situation? We have to try to make the car more easy to drive."
Sergio Perez signed a two-year extension with Red Bull early in the season. However, if his performances are not up to par, he might struggle to keep his place.
