Sergio Perez's father has been hospitalized following a medical emergency where he reportedly suffered from a pre-infarction, a condition that can present itself in the form of chest pain ahead of a heart attack.

The incident occurred on the morning of 15 September, immediately after Sergio Perez had a big shunt with Carlos Sainz during the F1 Azerbaijan GP.

Antonio Perez Garibay's (Sergio Perez's father) press office released a statement about the incident and stated,

“The incident occurred following his son’s impact during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, in a collision with driver Carlos Sainz. Perez Garibay was found unconscious in the bathroom of his Mexico City home, where paramedics attended to provide immediate medical attention."
"He was rushed to a hospital in the capital, where he is currently under medical observation and in stable condition. We thank you for your expressions of support and affection.”

Sergio Perez was having one of the better races of the season as he was fighting for the podium. On the penultimate lap of the race, the driver had a major shunt with Carlos Sainz as both drivers were battling for P3 in the race. Both drivers escaped the racing incident safely.

With Checo's father still in the hospital under observation, he was reported by the Mexican publication Medio Tiempo as having said that the shock of the accident might have caused it. He said:

“Everything happened after the accident. The shock of the accident may have caused it. They are already checking my heart to see why I fainted.”

"It's very unfortunate": Sergio Perez on the crash with Carlos Sainz

Sergio Perez had a brilliant drive in Baku. He had everything under control and was running in P3 when Charles Leclerc, in front of him, ran out of rear grip and was suddenly struggling. The squabble for the podium saw Sainz enter the fray as the Spaniard was right behind Perez in the last two laps.

After trying a move on Leclerc, Perez was jumped by Sainz into turn 2 but as the Mexican tried to get the position back, the two collided. Looking back at the incident, Perez told F1TV:

“I felt that exiting Turn 2, there was plenty of room between both cars, and within a metre or two, we ended up making contact. It’s very unfortunate. It all happened so quickly. I think Carlos was trying to follow the tow from Charles as he went to the inside and that really made things really hard.”

Perez would be feeling content with how the entire race weekend went, even though he didn't get the desired result. It does not happen often that the Mexican outperform Max Verstappen, but in Baku, it appeared that he had everything under control.
