Sergio Perez could be sacked by Red Bull before the end of the 2024 F1 season. Christian Horner refused to give any guarantees about the Mexican driver’s future.
Red Bull slumped to third in the Constructor’s championship behind McLaren and Ferrari after Max Verstappen finished P6 and Perez finished dead last in the Mexican GP. The reigning WCC trail leaders McLaren by 54 points and the Scuderia team by 25 points.
After the race, Horner was asked about their driver's lineup and the performances of Perez this season. He told the media, including Sportskeeda:
“Look, it’s a performance-based business. There comes a point in time that difficult decisions have to be made.”
Red Bull could have capitalized on McLaren’s misfortune as Piastri qualified 17th for Sunday’s main race. However, home hero Sergio Perez could only qualify 18th on Saturday. Moreover, Piastri improved during the Grand Prix and finished P8 whilst Perez finished dead last.
Red Bull could promote Yuki Tsunoda to partner Max Verstappen. Some rumors also circulated about Liam Lawson driving alongside Verstappen next season while RB sign Franco Colapinto to partner Tsunoda.
Sergio Perez responds to on-track battle with Liam Lawson
Liam Lawson and Sergio Perez had a heated battle on track in Mexico. The duo went head-to-head for positions but ended up making contact with each other, ultimately costing both of them. Perez also had a small hole in his car’s bodywork due to the incident with the Kiwi driver.
After the race, the Mexican driver talked about Lawson’s lack of respect towards F1 veterans citing the RB driver’s clash with Fernando Alonso.
Sergio Perez said after the race about Liam Lawson (Quotes by Sportskeeda):
“I think he could have avoided the incident but he just went back. Luckily I saw him and I opened the room. Otherwise, it would have been a massive crash. There was no need, he damaged both of our races.”
Perez continued:
“Yeah, I think it was just a little bit too much, but I don't think it's his fault. He's not getting any penalties as well. You know, he did the same with Fernando, with Franco in the end and there are no penalties. So no none of his fault as well.”
Perez ultimately pitted in the final lap of the race in an attempt to win the fastest lap. However, Charles Leclerc won the point, and Checo ultimately finished last in his home race.
With rumors flying about the veteran Red Bull driver’s future, who do you think should replace the Mexican?
