Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso has shared his peculiar prediction for the upcoming UEFA Euro Cup match between Spain and Italy, to be held on Thursday, June 20. The match falls on the same weekend as the 2024 F1 Spanish Grand Prix.
The 42-year-old's home-country bias might have been strangely strong with this one. When asked about the match between Spain and Italy at a press conference ahead of the Spanish GP, Alonso replied that the former will win with a staggering 18-goal advantage. He said:
"Spain will win... 21-3."
Carlos Sainz, his fellow Spanish driver on the grid, was also asked about the match. He predicted the score to be:
"2-1. Spain win with a late goal."
The two Spanish drivers on the F1 grid seem to be very specific with their predictions. At the same time, Spain are seemingly in a good position against the Italians. The former has performed strongly under the guidance of Luis de la Fuente and has also managed to win three of the last five matches they had with Italy prior to this. The rest two matches were tied.
Fernando Alonso expects Aston Martin to compete in the midfield in Barcelona
While Fernando Alonso has high hopes for the Spain national football team, he seems to be lacking that confidence from Aston Martin as he heads into his home race. He predicted that they might finish the race within the midfield.
Aston Martin was one of the strongest teams in the 2023 F1 season initally, however, after their form wore out by the end of the season, it has remained the same. Both Alonso and Stroll have been out of the top places during the races, and the Spaniard predicts that so will be the case in the upcoming race at Barcelona.
Talking to Mundo Deportivo, Fernando Alonso stated that they might finish between P8 and P12 in the race. He said:
"Well, we’ll see. It is difficult to know what can happen, realistically. I suppose between 8th and 12th, which is our natural position this year.
"Of course, arriving at your home Gand Prix with all the fans to say you expect to finish 10th? You always want to keep high hopes. Those of your fans, your own and those of the team. So it is normal to dream of a little more, no? Hopefully, we can have a great result."
Fernando Alonso's best race result was in Canada two weeks ago with a P6 finish. While he has finished largely within the points in other races as well (except Imola and Monaco), he was down in the midfield, where he expects to finish in Spain as well.
