F1 fans shared their reactions after Mercedes driver George Russell hit back at Red Bull driver Max Verstappen's post-race comments directed at him last weekend at the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix. The four-time F1 world champion was livid in his media interactions as he claimed that he was not impressed by Russell's behavior in the stewards' room after the qualifying session.
The Red Bull driver was given a one-place penalty for blocking the three-time race winner during the Q3 session. However, the penalty did not impact the results as Verstappen won the race while the Mercedes man finished in P4.
Speaking after the Qatar GP, George Russell responded to Max Verstappen's comments and called the events of the weekend "ironic." He claimed the Red Bull driver went as far as to threaten him after coming out of the stewards' room. Russel said,
"I find it all quite ironic seeing as Saturday night he said he was going to purposefully go out of his way to crash into me and 'Put me on my f*****g head in the wall.' So to question somebody's integrity as a person, while saying comments like that the day before, I find is very ironic, and I'm not going to sit here and accept it."
F1 fans took to social media to give their reactions to George Russell's comments on Max Verstappen, reflecting contrasting feelings about the Mercede driver's comments. One fan said:
"Talking a lot shit left and right with addressing what he did with the stewards 😂"
Another fan said,
"George Russell, you never fail to move me."
One fan seemed to appreciate Russell's comments, saying,
"George Russell in his villain era and I am here for it!"
Here are some more fan reactions:
"I did not expect George Russell to come out with all of these comments, but hopefully this doesn’t just due down over winter and become all forgotten about by next year," wrote another fan.
"The George Russell hate watch next year will hit like crack," said another.
"Vamos george russell!!!!!" claimed another.
George Russell terms Max Verstappen a "bully" in Abu Dhabi
In his comments on the incident with Max Verstappen, Mercedes driver George Russell said many drivers had been bullied by the Dutchman. He added that the Red Bull driver's comments were "disprespectful."
The 26-year-old said (via ESPN),
"People have been bullied by Max for years now, and you can't question his driving abilities. But he cannot deal with adversity. Whenever anything has gone against him -- Jeddah '21, Brazil '21 -- he lashes out. Budapest this year, the very first race the car wasn't dominant, crashing into Lewis, slamming his team ...
"As I said, for me, those comments on Saturday night and Sunday were totally disrespectful and unnecessary. Because what happens on track, we fight hard, that's part of racing. What happens in the stewards' room, you fight hard, but it's never personal. But he's taken it too far now."
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen said he had "no regrets" regarding his comments about the Mercedes driver.
