Ferrari, as a team, have been doing a better job than their drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, according to former Williams driver Ralf Schumacher. The Italian team have not had the best of starts to the 2023 F1 season. They were aiming to fight for the title but have done anything but that.
Ferrari produced a car that was just not fast enough compared to Red Bull. To make things worse, both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc have not had a great start to the season. The Spaniard has found it tough to find a rhythm with the car while his teammate has had one crash too many already this season.
Talking about Ferrari and their drivers in his weekly column with the German edition of Sky Sports, Schumacher felt that the team had not done a bad job, however, the drivers had been particularly disappointing. Recapping the race in Miami, he wrote:
"Ferrari once again fell short of expectations. Ferrari has given me a very decent impression since Fred Vasseur took office. A lot has happened there. I see the biggest problem with the drivers. For me, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are not consistent enough. Leclerc himself has said that, against the advice of his engineers, he mistuned the car."
He added:
"With his mistakes, he shows that he either doesn't have the maturity or maybe at the end of the day he's not consistently good to drive a world championship for Ferrari. At the moment this is not the case. Sainz was eight tenths away from Leclerc on a weekend, in Miami he was at his level, braked and drove into the pit lane too quickly. To be honest, the Ferrari team is currently doing a better job than both drivers."
Is Charles Leclerc crashing too often?
Charles Leclerc's driving has come under a lot of scrutiny because of the frequency of his crashes this season. The driver crashed in Miami and that compromised his qualifying.
Even in Baku where he had a stellar weekend, Leclerc had crashed in qualifying. To make things even worse, the Ferrari driver suffered a first-lap DNF in Australia as well because of a collision.
There's certainly the indication that the driver is arguably trying too hard this season and that has not really worked out for him. He might need to keep a tab on that aggression as it is starting to have a counterproductive impact on his racing.
